I have bought a Canon EOS 7D.There does not seem to be any sort of info in the box to show it has a warranty ect? does it have to be registered or something.Thanks.

Don't remember a warranty card with mine, as long as you have a Uk receipt you should have no problems getting it fixed - hopefully you won't need to :D

You can register on the Canon site. . It's a bit torturous, but it's there. Helps if you've already registered a product.

Think there was a warranty card in with my camera a few years ago, shop I bought it from advised me to register it on line if I was going to register it, so I knew it had been done and was registered.

He said most of the time, you don't get an acknowledgement if you post it in, so you've no real way of knowing it has been done - obviously thinks have probably changed now, but I still register on line if I can.

Never had any with my Canon kit, just make sure you keep your receipts safe that's all Canon need.

As far as I know - and I'm happy to be corrected on this - this existence or otherwise of a card, and whether you register it or not, will make no difference to your rights as a consumer. The camera must be of `merchantable quality` and `suitable for the purpose for which it's intended`, in outline. Date of manufacture can easily be established from the serial number, which may also indicate where and when it was sold. Keeping all the receipts is sensible, as when/if you sell it on, I want to know its history if I'm going to buy it from some dodgy-looking character. ;)

Proof of purchase is a reasonable thing for the manufacturer or whoever to ask for before they repair it, or take it in part-exchange, or buy it. For all they know, you may have nicked it. So keep the receipt and packaging. (Half my loft is full of boxes that held shiny things).

Citizens Advice Bureau stuff

Legally you don't even need that, if you get a signed written statement from a witness of you buying the product then your good

My 7D had to have a trip to Elstree under warranty. All they wanted was a photocopy of dated proof of purchase.

That's exactly my experience over many warranty claims.

It doesn't seem to be a satisfactory safeguard bearing in mind how much gear I buy, but if the manufacturers are happy with the process then it's not for me to complain.

As said earlier, there is no UK requirement for you to inform any manufacturer of a purchase, they only want the information for their own marketing use. They used to sell it on, but I think this practice has been clamped down ( but I could be wrong ! )

I had a card in the box of my 5D2 but not the 7D or 550D. I also got cards with my 100-400 L, 100 2.8 L macro and my sigma 150-500 OS lenses but not any of the other canon lenses I've bought.

Under consumer law, you do not need a receipt. You only need a proof of purchase - so it could be an entry on a credit card statement or something on that line.
