I have had a few shutter replacemnts on various cameras.. all within the estimated shutter life of a camera...

What if the shutter count is higher than the estimated life.. would it still be covered by warranty and replaced or would they say.. well its supposed to go so hardly warranty.. which i would understand I guess..

So anyone know if they replace shutter under warranty if shutter count higher than estimated...

I ahve asked canon.. but the reply was to point me to the canon warranty terms online.. which doesnt really tell me :(

From what I've read about "Expected Shutter Lifetimes" they are only estimates and have no effect on the warranty. If you have a camera that has a failure after only 5,000 actuations, but is outside the warranty the manufacturer won't do anything, so perhaps reasonably I'd expect the opposite to be true if the camera fails after 1,000,000 shots but is only 6 months old?

I am about to extend my warranty to 3 yrs total.. I ahve done over 200k in the first 9 mths... my estimated 400k will pass way before the warranty ends... but cant get a straight answer on shutter replacement..

TBH, I would hope that a time limited warranty wouldn't also be an actuation number limited warranty unless that was specifically stated. I doubt that you're the only pro in that situation.

Car warranties are normally stated as "X Years or XX,000 miles" whereas camera warranties aren't so I would expect that the actual shutter actuations isn't written in to the warranty. If a warranty does expire after a set number of actuation then manufacturers really should start making that a lot clearer at the point of sale.

Haing said that, if it is hidden in the terms of the warranty somewhere then I really wouldn't be surprised. If a very busy pro tog gets through 300,000 actuationsper year then it's pretty much expected that the natural wear and tear on the shutter will make it fail before the 2 year warranty period.

In summary, I've no idea!!

hehe

The problem has never arrisen before.. now canon are offering an extra 2 yrs warranty for 170 quid.. (so 3 yrs total) makes sense to presume at my rate that the shutter will go.. 170 is probably half of what a new shutter will cost :)

you can see why i am asking though.. anyone? canon state x number of expected actuations.. seems sorta reasonable that if you double that then try to get it fixed on warranty they could say..well.....

like i say.. asked canon.. now waiitng for my cps rep to get back to me.. just wondered with thousands of TP users ..surely someone would have had a shutter replaced over the estimated ?:)

Is this your 1Dx you are talking about?

I was under the impression that the extra 2 years were on top of the two years you get on the 1Dx making it 4 years warranty.

might be wrong.

1 yr on cameras.. 2 yrs on lens

yes the 1dx :)

2 years on the 1DX

You bought yours in Europe, so it should get the two years, no?

THANKS... I complete forgot about this.. I did register the camera with canon at the time.. just logged into canon warranties reg and its there... says when i bought it but not when warranty expires...

they ahve it now and are working on it as a warranty job so theres no issues..

makes the extra 2 yrs even more worthwhile... 4 yr warranty ? :)

Got a reply from my canon CPS rep and it's not good news :(

This is what I asked ..exact quote
If my shutter is estimated at 400 thousand actuations on a 1dx... if my shutter dies at say 500 thousand actuations.. is it still covered by warranty for a replacement even though its gone past estimated amount? thank you :)

the offical reply..again exact quote

Hi Anthony,

Thank you for your message.
In the case you highlight below, it would not be covered under warranty. However a shutter replacement these days is not as expensive proportionally as in the film camera days. The cost of a replacement is likely to be around 5-8% of the cost of the camera.

So thats very bad news :( and a surprise to all I am betting :(

:( I am betting then that there is a 'wear and tear' clause in the T&C's of the warranty. Your usage means a failure of the shutter would be considered as wear & tear and not manufacturing defect, which, trying to be devils advocate here, it probably would be.

thats why i asked and pointed out that i would understand the reasoning behind it.. so its not the best news but i do follow the logic.. however its still a suprise in that i had never considered it before and looking at this thread.. neither had anyone else..

again this wouldnt be a problem for probably me or anyone else on a 1 or 2 yr warranty... but as you can pay canon 170 quid for an extra 2 yrs.. then its not only me who will pass 400k in 4 yrs.. plenty of working photogrpahers will.. and the shutter wont be replaced and they wont know...

well hopefully this thread will be found easily in google searches and maybe inform a few more people. Like you say, the reasoning is understandable, but the forward thinking on the issue less so. I guess the extended warranty for heavy users is still worth doing for other issues, though it will be a case of weighing up as how many other issues could they perhaps claim are also wear & tear? :shake:

I wont be taking up the extended warranty... I mean after 2 yrs.. surely any defaults would have been found ....... was a good idea for shutter replacements but my current 2 yrs will do as i will easy reach 400k ... otherwise.. really cant see extra 2 any use..

Will you still be using the same body after 2 years or are you likely to have upgraded? Reading Admirable's link, I would say that the warranty (extended or not) will cover any faults but (as probably pointed out earlier), wear and tear will not be covered (in the same way that a clutch that fails due to the centre pulling out would be down to a manufacturing fault but one that slips after a few "enthusiastic" peel outs would be worn out).

Could be worth pointing this possible source of irritation out to as many people as possible across forums so high users don't get sucked into purchasing (basically) worthless extra cover.

Will you still be using the same body after 2 years .

yes.. i have a 1dx and a mkIV so the next upgrade will see the mkIV go and I will ahve the new camera and 1dx as second..

cant afford to upgrade 2 at a time for 5k each so its done on a leap frog system :)

Tony, I wonder if its worth editing the thread title to be even more representative of the points raised? Just a passing thought, but might be worth it.

I am easy :)

I've just been approached to extend the warranty on my 5D3, which wont get anything like as much use as a pro camera, being as I am an amateur, however I did consider it probably worthwhile. From what I'm reading from this thread the shutter wouldnt get repaired if they thought it was normal wear & tear, now as we know shutters can/do fail at any time. So it looks to me like they would refuse to pay on mine as well. I do recall someone having shutters fail within the 1 yr warranty in the past and them having a big problem getting them fixed under warranty and they were well below "expected" life, cant recall if it was a 5D mk3 or a mk2 (2 I think). Think I will decline the offer as a new shutter is "only" 5-8% apparently!!!

Thread makes interesting reading.

The problem isnt first year.. the problem is if it fails after the expected shutter count it wont be coverd by warranty.. if it fails below expected shutter count it will be fixed.. doesnt matter how long you ahve had the camera... If I take out this extra 2 and have 4 yr warranty.. if in 3 yrs 11 mths it fails at less than 400 then they pay...

Thats the way I read it ..........nothing to do wiht time.. just amount of actuations.. they pay if below estimated.. you pay if above..

Just my thoughts here

Surely though a pro with a 5K camera would take out the extra warranty. Ok the shutter is not covered as canon state 150K actuation expected life so that is reasonable to assume but what about say the circuit board in side that runs the camera, How much is that to replace?? and because the camera has made say 400K actuations would that be wear and tear too??

I think if it where me I would be looking at what is exactly covered in the extended warranty, because for the sake of £170 then surely that is cheaper than a new 5K camera??

Just thinking out loud.

spike

but what about say the circuit board in side that runs the camera,

if that runs for 2 yrs then its not default.. if that goes after 2 yrs surely it wil be wear and tear.. not covered..

i cant see what would go on a camera after 2 yrs that isnt wear and tear ?

That's what I would have thought too, but if you read the warranty it says items subject to wear & tear arent covered (at all in the case of video heads etc). So I think it might be difficult to get a shutter replaced if Canon thought it had been worn out rather than failed because it was defective and as above I do recall a problem someone had during the warranty period getting a shutter replaced even though it hadnt reached the estimated/expected lifespan.

Sorry.. might be me.. but how can a shutter die being worn out (wear and tear) wiht less than expected shutter life ? all you can do is press the shutter.. make an actuation..

are you saying if they did 50k in the first week and it died then canon would say user fault?

Sounds like this extended warranty is waste of money? Surely cameras are covered under the SoGA?

The Sale of Goods Act covers items lasting a 'reasonable' length of time, once out of manufacturer warranty. With the best will in the world, a shutter that has far exceeded the average expected life span, probably can't really be classed as a 'reasonable' lifespan. Not to mention it can be very hard fight to get retailers to sort out under the SoGA, so you are without camera for however long it takes, regardless of the issue... which is why to some people, it is worth the expence. To others it won't be. ;)

I always look on warranties and insurance as "they will do what they like to not pay out" and extended warranties are no better, hence why I said maybe find out what is covered for pro use not just Joe Bloggs buying a camera and using it at weekends to take pics of the family.

I suppose in a business plan it is factored in to replace a camera every X number of years so maybe its just not worth it?

I don't mean Shutter failure as that is accepted as wear and tear. But the extended warranty smacks of the old Currys/Dixons/etc con of extended warranties for stuff that are covered under the SoGA anyway.

hence why i already contacted canon and the CPS before starting this thread... already thunk of that :) canon sent me a link to warranty terms which didnt help and cps replied which i posted :)

Sorry I was not really too clear, I was meaning could the cps you spoke to reference the shutter issue not be of any more help along the same lines???

I took out 3 yr extra cover on my 1 Ds3 ....mack cover...and had the rear screen and joystick replaced under warranty, just about broke even.
As Yv says, the wear and tear thing would apply to shutters, but would it apply to joystick use??...mine was covered with the Mac but not sure it would have been with the Canon one.
Have you looked at the Mac warranty?...might be a better bet.
George.
