Hey Guys,

I really want a longer lens, just purely for fun.
It would be used for Motorsport and wildlife.
Now I can't justify spending alot of money on a lens im only going to use for fun, so im thinking instead of buying the x2 extender.
This would be used along with a 70-200mm f2.8L obviously giving me 400mm at the long end (perfect)

How much quality will I loose from using the extender compared to the lens's usual high quality.

Also what f.stop would it take it down too.

Thanks
Gary

2 stops and if you stop down to about f8 you find it very good match

I agree with Mr GBadger, I bought one used it once or twice and eventually sold it.

I have the 70-200 2.8 and a 2x and tried it. Wasnt very impressed, its fine with the 1.4 but you lose a lot of IQ with the 2x. On a budget and going from the any shot is better than no shot point of view yes it works.

I think the general consensus is that it works, but you're not really doing a £1000 lens justice by adding it on. Having said that, there's probably not really a cheaper way of getting 400mm from your current setup. I'd advise caution, as I have a sneaking suspicion you'd soon be selling it and saving for a 100-400, or a 400mm prime :D

Chris, I think this thread has made me want to do that now mate.
But no rush, I have the kit I need..... at the moment ;)

if you keep your eyes out you can get a tokina 80-400 for a couple of hundred quid 2nd hand. I had one of those as well. Wasnt too bad for the cash but as chris said you will end up with a 100-400 or similar so might as well start saving now!

I agree, im making sure not to waste money any more, as I have often gone for the cheaper version and ended up paying out for the expensive one in the end.

This time I was a bit less concerned with quality as it was just for fun, but its starting to sound like its not even worth the £200 odd.

Thanks for your replys.

Its a pity your not closer or you could have borrowed mine, why not see if someone near by will lend you one then you can make up your own mind?

As for the buy cheap buy twice been there and one that several times now!!

That would have been extremly kind of you! :)

And in regards to buy cheap / buy twice. Me too :)

Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 - Canon 24-70mm f2.8 being one of my main!

why not keep your eyes open for a s/h x2 then when funds allow for a longer lens sell it you wont lose much if any money and you will have something to be going on with

I will likely be in London mid-January for a 2 day seminar.

If you would like to see if we can meet so that you can try my 1.4x and 2x and get an idea of the image quality using the two TC's then let me know :)
