Hi all, I want to extend the range of my Canon 100-400 lens. I would like a Canon x2 teleconverter but can't justify the price. What other converters are as good?

Remember the 2x teleconverter has a light loss of 2 stops which means you will lose the ability to autofocus with that lens on most cameras.

I believe the 1dx will still allow autofocus at f8 though

I'm not bothered about that to be honest, I have a x1.4 and I lose auto focus with that.

I tried a Kenko 2x for a short while but wasn't too impressed with it. I have the 1.4x Kenko and I also have the Canon 1.4x MkIII and the 2x MkIII and without a doubt the Canon will give you better results on a 100-400. As said above, you will lose AF with the 2x but for moon shots and other long distance (specially static) where you can manually focus it's brilliant. I've not tried the MkI or MkII Canon extenders so if you can try one of those and get one you're happy with it you might get it cheaper.

5d mk3 will at f8 also. 2x tc works ok with the 100-400. I've used it for moon and static bird shots, however as said, you will be up at f11 at the longest.
