hi there, been reading round for ages trying to decide what dslr i should get, ive been round a few shops and have decided on either the canon 450 or 500d, this will be my first dslr. now im off to kenya early next year and have been looking at a few zoom, my question is what out of these to would you go for?

will both of these lenses autofocus on the above bodies as im led to believe neither the 450 or 500d have built in focus motors?

ive read some reviews on the 55-250 and have heard its a very good lens for the money, ive yet to see any rewiews or the 75-300 but obvisly has the longer reach which be of a better bonus.

so which of the two should i be looking at, or is there any others? budget would be £250, but may stretch to £300

The 75-300m should be really considered quite a good and cheap 75-200 mm lens because beyond 200mm it gets progressively softer and less sharp.

Really depends on what you want.

If you can afford it i'd go for the 70-300 IS USM which is much better even at 300mm, and you may be able to get a good S/H one on here.

Another vote for the 70 300 IS USM.

Try to pick it up second hand and it may fit your budget.

If that's not possible, the 55 - 250 IS has a very good reputation as well.

I'd avoid the 75 300 as it doesn't have IS, which is extremely useful on a tele lens, and it doesn't have a great reputation image-quality wise either.

yeah i will be looking for second hand 75-300 IS if not it will be the 55-250 which i can upgrade at a later date

Keep your eyes open on this site for a used Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and add a 2x converter, if your budget will stretch to it.

shop around on prices, that 55-250 is £35 more than amazon.

The 75-300 you linked to is not that well regarded, but the 70-300 USM is, about twice the price of the 55-250. From what I read here you want as long as you can get..
If its a one off trip I'd consider hiring a 100-400L from stewart on here.

I use a 75-300 USM mk 3 on my ew 450D, I never notice a problem with sharpness.

Two of Canon's stand-out lenses are the EF-S 55-250 and EF 70-300 IS. The 75-300 is not well regarded. PM kerso on here for a price on new kit, you might get a nice surprise ;)

You could pick up a 70-300 IS for £300 used.

But you'll want reach for a safari. Canon 100-400L is out of your budget but it's worth an email to StewartR http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/canon-telephoto-8-c.asp for a hire quote. £60 a week and might still be affordable for a three week deal.

70-300 is entirely different to the (poor) 75-300. If you're considering the latter then the 90-300 is probably also worth a look. I'd suggest buying either 2nd hand so you can pass them on pretty much at cost when you're done

I looked at the same lenses for my 400d. I ended up getting the 55-250mm IS. I went for this because of the IS. When at 250 and I switch off IS the lens is all over the shop, so I can only imagine what 300mm would be like without IS.

I may get in to trouble, but I feel we can both help each other out....
With not sufficient posts, I can't currently list items for sale, this where I may get in trouble.
However, I'm currently looking to change my lens lineup completely, which means finding a home for my ef 70-300IS USM. It's in fine condition, comes with all caps and a lens hood (cheapo Canon make you buy it seperate) but no manual or box. If this post is passed ok by the mods I'd be happy to discuss a sale, which would fall within your budget.
