Recently bought a 450d with kit lens 18-55 IS and looking to expand.

Always loved a good range on zoom as at work I've used a Nikon D50 with 70-300 and a 17-55 (I think) lenses but that's work where I can take time and change lenses and not have to worry about carting stuff about etc..

I want to do some portrait work but also love to 'get in close' when out and about without getting in close!! I know the 28-135 is the better lens but I really feel I'd be limited by the range. I have a Panasonic Lumix with an 18x zoom and I really do use the zoom a great deal.

Sooo.... either get a nifty fifty and a 55-250 or just a 28-135 - either way I'd still have to keep the kit lens for width when needed though. Any other options??? I'm confused!!

(Budget no more than £250 absolute tops - shoudlnt really be going over £200!!)

If you already have the kit lens I think the 55-250 is an ideal addition to your kit. Thats what I choose anyway.

55-250 and keep the kit, especially if you intend to get a 50mm f1.8 aswell, that imho is a great starters set up, that plus a flashgun was my kit for 6 months -a year (not quite as I had a tamron 70-300 but you get the point)

Exactly the way I did it, and you have just described my current set up.

looking to make my next lens purchase in October/November, but flummoxed as to which one next.

But I agree with the others, the 55-250 is a great lens for a person of my experience.
