Cant get the hang of my D7000

:)I recently upgraded to a d7000, from my old trusty d3000. I'm finding the transition really quite difficult and I am now doubting whether to even sell my d3000...because the d7000's auto focus and lack of sharpness is driving me bonkers.

currently on my d7000 is a 35mm 1.8 lens. i can produce better pictures on my d3000 with that lens. i know, i know, it's the users fault and it probably is but can anyone tell me where im going wrong?

i have my focus things on AF-C with just one spot. but no picture is sharp enough for my taste and almost off focus despite it saying it is.

i want to upload some examples. can you help? i dont know how to attach an image.
 
Are you having the same problem with the kit lens? You might have a forward/backward focusing issue
 
i bought the d7000 as a body only on credit/finance (impulsve spending :bang:) but have the 18-55mm kit lens from my old d3000 which i havent used on it yet.

whats a back focus issue? shall i attach a picture for you to see or can i kindly ask to email a couple? :)

Yeah i know i was answering your other question about selling the d3000. Try the other lens.

my 18-55mm kit lens is performing for me well. focuses on everything i want it to. :(

ive just read about....back focusing etc...but no idea what all thats about. pah.
 
Basically the camera isn't focusing in the right place, in the case of back focus the focus point in behind where it should be. Does it look like it is always something just behind the subject which is in focus?
 
i dont really know, i cant really explain it, but - its not sharp, and occassionally where i point isnt in focus - a bit blurred but yes thinking now something other than what i intended is in focus.

i will read the link and get back to you guys on what im going to do next. thanks so much for all the posts/messages and the quick replies. i was getting a bit disheartened. hope this thing is easy to fix:(
 
Sorry I don't mean to sound patronising, but you haven't flipped the MF/AF button on the 35mm by mistake have you?

are you sure you arent in continuous focus mode or something like that ?
 
Put it on AF-S, try again to focus on your subject. The 35mm + D7000 is an incredible combination for a wide variety of purposes.

change your focus mode to AF-S, AFS-C,is to track subject,
 
Try all the above....then just send it in to Nikon....had my for months reading all the posts about back focussing etc and convincing myself it was "me" but in the end tested against another D7000 and realised mine did indeed have a problem. £72 later im in love :)

Let's not be rash. It focuses fine with his 18-55 kit lens, so perhaps it just needs a AF adjustment from the menu with the 35mm.
 
cheers for all your replies guys. it's been helpful. i THINK, because i had it on AF-C....it wasnt performing for me as well. i am taking it out tomorrow and changing the setting to AF-S (if thats what you think?) and see what happens.
 
As the man above says - try the Af adjust - mine is set to -15 for all my lenses
 
I had severe back focusing with my 35 when I had my D7000 while it was perfect on my d5000. The D7000 is well known for af issues one of the reasons I moved on to the D700.

How else does the d7000 compare to your g1? Iam looking to upgrade my g2 to either a d7000 or a d5100.

Yes there is a menu item for it under the 'spanner' symbol - AF Fine Tune

The camera will recognise the lens from its cpu chip, once adjusted and saved, when you attach a lens that has been adjusted the camera will automatically adjust the focus to the settings saved.

If you change to another lens that has been adjusted the camera will automatically recognise this and apply the settings for that lens
 
The d7000 had a lot better iso range and is especially better in low light conditions. Performance is great (when in focus!), always found manual focus a dream on g1 due to automatic magnification of area - i miss that on d7000. Hardly use g1 now. When d7000 works to full potential it is fantastic, when it doesn't it is the most frustrating thing in the world.

The 18-55 has a max aperture that varies from 3.5 to 5.6. If his D7000 was misfocusing with that, it would be destined for repair or the scrapyard :lol:

Aside from focusing errors, camera shake is something to consider. If you're looking at 100% magnification, bear in mind that camera shake that wouldn't have registered on a D3000, will register on the higher resolution D7000.

AF-C!!! Dammit! Will change settings and have another go!! Thanks for heads up guys!
