Hey guys,

Question about Capture NX. Or possibly Lightroom or both.

If, in my D700, I set a picture control, say Vivid or Monochrom, when I take a shot and look on the LCD screen it shows the picture control in effect, however when I take the image to Lightroom I lose that picture control. I was wondering if Capture NX keeps the picture control or whether I have to revert to JPEG as opposed to RAW to keep the picture control setting?
 
Capture NX2 keeps Picture Control, you can either leave it as shot or change it to other settings.
 
Hmm.. there's a lot I like about Capture NX2 from looking at the trial version. But equally there's a LOT I don't like about it. I like the results I'm getting from it and how well it integrates with my camera but I've got to say the interface is utterly gash. And it's slow as well. It seems to want to render every change you make - from adjusting exposure to adjusting colour/brightness etc. which in photoshop and lightroom are pretty much instantaneous.

I would love to be able to use this as my main tool because I love how it recognises picture controls and adjustments you make to them so I can pretty much do most of my processing in camera, but the interface is just awful!
 
Lightroom 2 using Camera Raw 5.x has Nikon(ish) picture controls built in so you can select them. Or at least it has for my D300.
Personally I find NX2 gives a cleaner image but no image management. LR2 provides the management but with average image processing.

Yeah, this is the thing. NX2 seems to generate a better image but getting there is a pain in the arse. I've started using picture controls more in my camera and not just the standard one, I'm creating a number of custom picture controls which I'm quite happy with. Lightroom just discards the custom picture control settings, which is a shame. Maybe I should just try and integrate NX2 in my workflow and do the editing there then ship them over to Lightroom to manage. I'll just have to get used to NX2 I suppose!

In LR2 > develop > camera calibration > profile(bottom RH of the develop window) you can adjust the profile to be any of the "Nikon standards".
How you add custom profiles I do not know.
 
I agree that the interface could be better but you can undock all the palettes and put them where you want. You can also use the Tab key to hide/show all the palettes.

It may seem slow but you do not have to keep making layers and changing between them, that all takes time but as you are doing something it seems OK, whereas just waiting for the program to complete a task seems to take forever.

Process a picture in NX2 then do the same changes in the other programs and see how long they all take.

i read somewhere that only nikon software will show" in camera "adjustments nikon protecting thier market perhaps:D

I think processing in Lightroom is far, far quicker! Although the results aren't quite as desirable and that I can do much of my processing in camera using picture controls is a timesaver too. I'm going to persist with Capture NX2 for the time being and try and fit it in my work flow because I can see the results are very good.
