Car Rig - Magnets

Yes
Okay okay, I would trawl through that thread on POTN but its just too many pages long, I am looking at developing my rig a little further and feel the magnets route is the right one to take.

I have been looking for a magnet, thinking in my head I need something the size of my fist and maybe even 2 of them.

Found these little things

Just dont know if I would trust holding my camera up with something 50mm big, says they will hold 16kg before sliding on a wall. So surely 2x of them on a pole?

Also, a quick, well not so quick, question with regards to a pole, I am using some extending painters pole at the minute, which has far too much flex. What kind of ally tubing do people suggest? Or is there a better material to use?

i've only used magnets the size of 5mm in this form and they were powerful.(different purpose of course!)
80kg a piece....I would not want to damage the car!! do you put something like a grip cloth underneath them??
also 80kg is a lot but you've got to think of moments and leverage of the rig. but two of them looks like a winner.
would love to see the final product

They go under the car.. I wouldnt let them near my paint, it would take the panel off before they came off!

But I haven't ever come across magnets so strong before.

I was trying to think back to my days of physics to how much a weight of say 1.5kg would be at the end of a pole at say 7ft

3.225kg. That would actally be the force if the pole was only held at the opposite end to the weight. I'm assuming you will support the pole at two points so the force would be even more distributed and effectively less to each magnet supporting it.

Well, I was planning on 2x Magnets on the end of the pole, one like 3" from the end, and another 12" down, to get 2 points of contact, and give a bit of freedom to move (When I work out how to do this)

I'd have one at the end of the pol and one as far away from the other magnet as you can get away with. Are the mganets fixed to the pole permanently? Perhaps look at a way of being able to reposition the magnets to accomodate different cars. I'm only down the road in Ashby so would be interested in seeing how you get along with this.

Well, that is hopefully as far away as I can, to save me buying an extra amount of tubing.

Looking at the automotive rigs website, I think I will get 3 lengths of sleeved aluminium tubing, with bolts that hold them together rather than using clamps around the outside.

Just got to work out a way to angle 1 single bar, so I can mount my bodged tripod to it and save myself buying a magic arm!

I have some steel wire I was going to put though to hold the camera up. I will draw this out so it makes sense

Bodging your tripod plus camera to the end of the boom is going to up the weight and therefore the load on the magnets considerably. What running a bolt through the enf of the boom and then attaching a tripod head to it? You can get reasonably cheap ball heads from Jessops for £10-15.

there is a magnet available from canal shops for retrieving stuff out of canals i used one and pulled a scooter out of the canal..... they are soooooo powerful
i have also made a rig to rest my camera on out of the big magnet base from a cb aeriel...

b&q sell tubes in i think 1 mtr 11/2 mtr of diff diameter in chrome it'sused in kitchens and bathrooms and curtain poles

Find a local Aluminium stockist and get some offcuts, it won't cost you much

The stuff you get from b&q isn't rigid enough.

Magnet wise, you need to be careful, don't go buying mag discs thinking you can then drill holes in them for u-clamps or bolts etc to hold the tube because the act of drilling them will screw up the magnetism (unless of course you can get them magnetised afterwards :) )

If you see the link... they come pre drilled with a thread for a bolt already, so with a bolt through the tubing it will go straight onto the magnet!

What kind of length / diameter / wall pole will I need. I am thinking around 10 foot over all. Which is a few 1000 poles clamped together somehow.

the sea searcher magnet has a pull of 140lbs and is sandwiched between 2 metal plates so you can attach a line to available on ebay maybe worth a look

what about a tv aeriel extension or cb pole to go on the house

just a last thought i know there is a clamp available to go on a car window to hold binoculars or spotting scope ...works same as a g clamp but does not brake the window
gotta do some work now this is cracking me up lol lol lol

haha.

Well, I have the suction cup rig already, but it is purely a makeshift thing and I want something more professional.

I have been reading into this much more, they do 'cranked poles'

Its just they are fixed angles. Any ideas on a clamp that will allow me to have a final pole come off at different angles?

I am going on a bit now with a lot of thinking outloud, sorry.

Can I just suggest not putting the magnet close to the camera (especially if they are that strong) I know they used to kill the old film camera shutters, and I suspect the shutter part hasn't changed that much in digital.

It's called a Manfrotto Magic Arm ;)
Yea, I know they cost about £100, but they are super flexible until you swing the lever and all 3 points lock tight. Also comes with a safety lock Manfroto head to mount the camera.
