Righto, firstly I hope this is the right section (mods feel free to move if needed)

I've done a bit of searching and I've seen a few of you have made your own, and I'd like a go a making one.

Are these the suction cups I need?

I take it I need 2 of those and some clamps to attach them to a pole. Would I use these and how many?

Now whats the best way to attach my camera to the pole, I see people have used a magic arm but its quite expensive so is there an alternative I could use?

Now onto the pole. I see people have used ally tubing. Where have people got this from and how have you made it collapsable?

I've seen ally flag poles on ebay for about £20, would you think this would be strong enough? Any other ideas?

Is theres anything else I have missed?

I have seen someone has used some metal wire as a support too to help minimise bounce. How important would it be to do something like that?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to be clear in what I need before I go spending money.

Think he did something about building a rig - maybe search through his previous posts. There have been a few car rig threads over the years - I'm sure a search will bring a result :thumbs:
 
Yea I've spent a few hours searching and reading but after a little more info to what I found :lol:

I'm after info on what people have used for a pole, where they got it from etc...

If I was to buy these clamps click would I need anything else to connect them to the suction cups or are they a direct fit?

Same for the magic arm, is everything provided with it thats needed to attach it to the pole?

I know roughly what I need but its the small details I'm not sure on and just asking for a little help as I'd rather order it all at once than have to buy again and pay for postage etc... again.

Any help is appreciated.

Hello, sorry I've been late to the party, been busy all weekend...

Sounds like the suction pads are sorted, although I think you might have a bit of trouble adjusting angle with those ones as they don't have the ball head attached to them. Bit limiting but not the end of the world...

I can't help you too much with the pole as different things suit different people. I got mine from the local screwfix. Intend to change it soon, but then I've been saying that for a while. I want something a lot lighter so it's easier to take on planes...

Sorry missed this as well. Those suckers are a bargain!

Mr Williams uses an Aerial pole from screwfix. It's a little bouncy, but if you consider your walking with the camera you can always take a little of the movement out yourself. I've seen others using a bracing wire to add rigidity.
At one point there was a carbon pole getting sorted but that seems to have died the death.

Super clamps are good - you'll need two for the pole if you're directly connecting to those spigots. I have 12" poles rising from mine so I can angle up and down the pole.

For the camera end you'll need something to connect a camera hotshoe. Ideally a magic arm plus another superclamp, but if you want to be a cheapskate something like this would do: http://www.cameragrip.co.uk/acatalog/hague_sc2_clamp.html

Lastly, a decent neural density filter to help you get longer exposures.
 
I'm currently looking for a pole too so would be interested in seeing what you find. Am considering a carbon one too for light weight and rigity.

The only reason I bought them tbh, couldn't say no at £10 each :lol:

I have found a metal supplier online that does telescopic ally tubing click would this be ok to use as then I can slide one inside the other and make it longer shorter as I need.

Is a 1.2mm wall thick enough?

I was going to buy a 1" OD and a 7/8" OD tube, would these be about the right size would you say?

Do you have any pics of your 12" poles fitted?

I have a 10 stop filter but have a feeling its too much for a rig shot. What ND filter would you suggest?
