Can anyone offer me advice as to which type and or brand to buy please?

Thanks. Will it take a Z8 with 600mm 6.3 attached?
AI overview says your combo weighs

  • Total Weight: ~2,380g (5.24 lbs).
IIRC from looking at the Hague site there isa max limit of 2kg but perhaps they make other mounts with a higher limit?

Edit
A door mount might be more applicable?

Or even a saddle beanbag with tripod head screw point?

Thanks. I think I'll explore the bean bag route.

If you have a tripod foot you could run a strap and hang it from a grab handle in the roof or from the roof rails if you have them.

What vehicle? And what are you photographing (stationary, low light, etc)?

The most stable and cost effective option is a beanbag, I combine it with a panning base attached to the lens foot when needed.

For less stability, but more flexibility, suspending the camera from the lens foot is a great option. But it requires a car with window frames or a gutter. This is one example (the Lens Sling I make/sell, but it's a pretty easy DIY).

And this is the Window Rail I make/sell which is based on HD pocket door hardware (200lb). Which is the best option for panning; but still reduced stability.

I wouldn't recommend anything that clamps to the window directly; it's not particularly stable and it's not designed to take the load vertically or twisting. Early on I used a Kirk window mount which is currently the WM-2 model, and there's the Leofoto WN-03 which I would probably like better than the Kirk. But I prefer the other options.

If it helps, here's a video where I compare the beanbag/pad, Kirk window mount, and the Window Rail.

I've rarely needed anything like this, but when I did, the bean bag solution worked well.
