Ok probably a really stupid one but I am just about to order a 7D from Digital Review, and am guessing reading the package that it doesn't come with a memory card, going from a 350D I have no idea what card to order with it, doesn't need to hold huge amounts of pics 50 max i would guess, what do I need to order with the Camera, ie size and does it require any special card
cheers from your numpty Doctor

Only 50 photos?

You are aware that you require a CF card, not an SD card?

Edit: I use a Transcend 400x 32G card, but I guess that's a bit too large for your requirements.

No i have no idea about the card required hence the question.

what is a cf card, need to know for when i order

ok so take it these are all cf cards, would 16GB be ok or do most go for memory?

If you only need to hold 50 shots, I guess you don't need a really large card.

I think 16GB is a good bet. You may not fill it up, but that doesn't matter.

Will you be shooting video too with the 7D?

Don't buy the 133x cards, they're too slow for the 7D if you ever use continuous or HD video in the future, go for 200x or 30MBps at the minimum.

An 8Gb card will hold approx 300 exposures in RAW.

Dont plan on using video, so a 16GB will be the one
Thanks for all the help

I can confirm that that my Transcend 133x 32gb card is fast enough for my 5D ii, keeps up with both video and the RAW frame buffer no problems. Got mine at a great price too.

No they're not. HD video only requires 5 MB/s. 133x cards should be 20 MB/s, easily fast enough.

Fair comment ref the HD video (I hardly ever use it), but the buffer certainly gets clogged when using medium length continuous in RAW.

50 shots from a 7D will take about 6 and a half seconds on fast burst mode :bonk:

suggest you get a bigger card, more the better

Couldn't agree more! I initially went the cheap route and bought a 4gb CF card, how wrong I was to assume it would make do! I think 32gb has a decent price/capacity ratio and saves the bother of swapping cards every 5 minutes. 16gb would be the bear minimum for me, even then with the size of RAW files from the 7D/5D, this is pushing it.

OTOH if you take hundreds of pictures on a shoot and the card goes up the Fritz then you have lost the lot.

I compromise with 8Gb Sandisk Extreme iiis.

I have bought the 16GB card so will see how it goes, All i need now is the 7D to arrive
