Yes
Not something I've really thought about before but just got myself a Mac and looking to upgrade my £6 cheap CF reader. The Mac has got 2 firewire 400 ports which I want to make use of, does anyone use anything like the SanDisk firewire external reader and is it worth paying £40 for one compared to £18 for the USB version?

A slightly geeky approach.

A = Card speed in Mb/s
B = Interface speed in Mb/s

If A>B, then you would benefit from a faster card reader. But will the faster card reader be worth the money?

F = Price in £ for Firewire Card Reader
U = Price in £ for USB 2.0 Card Reader
C = Amount of data in Gb
V = Value of your time in £ per hour
D = Transfer time of C in Seconds using Firewire
E = Transfer time of C in Seconds using USB
H = Money saved by using Firewire in stead of USB
I = Money spent on using Firewire in stead of USB

(D-E) x (V/3600) = H

If H>I, get the firewire card reader. If H<I, get the USB card reader.

If H<I, but you really want the Firewire card reader, adjust V.

I've recently changed to a firewire Sandisk reader.
The difference in speeds are amazing.
I used to wait forever to download raw files. Not any more :woot:

Any place worth recommending to purchase from? Seems most sell at around the £45 mark

Anyone used The Lexar Firewire reader? I heard they are good, but not sure if they read all CF card makes?
