Card readers

I currently use SanDisk 4GB Extreme III Compact Flash Cards and am trying to find a suitable reader - however, all the types that I have looked at thus far only quote their suitability as being for type I and II cards. Does anyone know if these are compatible or where a type III card reader can be obtained from?

They will be ok.

Type I and Type II

'The only difference between the two types is that the Type II devices are 5 mm thick while Type I devices are 3.3 mm thick. The vast majority of all Type II devices are Microdrives and other miniature hard drives. Flash based Type II devices are rare but a few examples do exist. Even the largest capacity cards commonly available are Type I cards. Most card readers will read both formats, with the exception of some early CF based cameras or poorer quality USB card readers where the slot is too small.'

Thanks for clearing that up - I've done a bit more searching and managed to find what I was looking for.

I picked one up from Asda works perfectly with my CF and it was a FIVER !!!

7dayshop.com have them from £2.99

Replies here have failed to point out that you are confusing Type I and II CF cards with the Sandisk designation III for their Extreme series. Type I and II refer to the size (thickness) of the two different CF card types. The III in Extreme III has nothing to do with the CF card size - it's the third version of the Extreme series. There is no CF III.

On the subject of readers - I had a standard multi-card el-cheapo reader that I picked up for under a fiver - it was working ok, but since shooting RAW on a 50d, I found the file transfer rate very slow. On the tip of someone on another forum, I bought a Sandisk CF card reader from 7dayshop - and I'm very impressed - the files just whizz into my PC now, compared to previously where the average 4gb card would take twenty minutes to download its info.. The under a fiver card readers work perfectly - but if you're after a bit more speed - look at the Sandisk!

A full 4gb CF should take in the region of 8 to 11 mins to transfer under USB2. If you're seeing a transfer time in the 50 min region then it is only working at USB1 rate. Some USB2 rated readers will sometimes be detected as and run as USB1. Unplugging and reconnecting has worked for me on occasions.
