Carrying a heavy lens!

I have just got myself a Sigma 50-500 which I like to carry attached to the camera for hand holding and quick use.

Any opinions on the best way to carry this combination? At the moment I am carrying it by the tripod mount as I assume by using the camera strap over the shoulder would put too much strain on the lens/camera coupling. :shrug:
 
A sling strap and one hand on the tripod mount is how I carry my 120-300
 
I have carried my Canon 500f4 over my shoulder attached to my camera for years and never had a problem.
 
When the 100-400 id attached to the camera I just hold the lens, normally with the had that normaly hold it when shooting that way if soething comes up and I need it quick its already in a position to take the pic quickly

keep the stress off the lens mount is the best thing to do , should be easy enough to work it out from there :)

That's interesting John. I just thought that might be a lot of weight to put on the coupling. Thanks everyone for the replies. Never heard of a 'rapid strap'. I'll have to look that one up.

To be fair thinking about it, watching the Moto GP the other night and you see the pro tgs there with massive lens attached to their camera just hanging off the shoulder whilst useing the other comaera they have.
So in that senario is the pro gear like the 1D series built stronger and prepared to take the strain of a 600 or 800 lens hanging from it or do these guys just not really care,

Definitely the best solution IMO

When I had a 120-300mm F2.8 that came with a strap attached to the tripod mount and it was just so much easier.

That said I found with the 100-400mm it was fine over my shoulder attached to the camera strap. I do use an optech neoprene strap though which has a good amount of flex in it. I really don't think you need to worry about the lens mount with a lens such as the 50-500mm.

With that camera body I would carry it by the lens tripod mount.
 
One of the things I like about the big Sigmas is that the tripod mount doubles as a proper handle. I find I can carry my 150-500 all day using this.
