I have been lucky enough to acquire a sigma 50-150 f2.8 lens for my d7000.
The lens weighs 1340g and the camera with grip about 800g.
My question is, will I damage the camera if I don't support the lens whilst carrying it?
I usually use my sling strap that attaches to the tripod mount to carry my camera.
Do I need to use something else or constantly support the lens?
 
No, once the lens gets heavy enough to be a worry it will have a tripod collar so you can attach your strap to that instead.
 
For all my heavy lenses I attach my sling strap to the tripod mount and have had no problems that way. I just make sure it's nice and tight every now and then to be on the safe side but I've never had one come loose yet. I wouldn't advocate attaching the strap to the camera and letting the lens hang down, mainly because it's uncomfortable like that for me. I usually have a Sigma 150-500 OS or Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII hanging off my sling and I'd be surprised if your lens was heavier than those.
 
You should look to obtain the services of a sturdy working class type chap and pay them the not unsubstantial sum of ten shillings for a full day to porter your equipment
 
Carry it using the tripod mount on the lens or use tijuana taxi's suggestion but using a chapess. Visually much better!

Ok so we are talking 500g difference in lens and body, does it really make that much difference, I ask because mounting on the body, it will hang down nicely, hanging from the lens I can't seem to get it to sit right.

The advantage of connecting the strap to the collar is that your are putting less stress on the lens mount. It balances better and distributes the weight much more effectively.
