Lovely kids and excellent portraits Karl, very nicely done.

The fill flash is working against you here, Karl.

The best thing you can do when shooting portraits outdoors is learn how to use natural light in such a way that you don't need fill flash. In the first two shots, the sun is low enough that you could have turned your kids' back to the sun (so no direct light was hitting the faces) and then metered for the face. That would give you nice backlight, much gentler shadows on the face (if any) and the open sky in front of your kids would have provided nice catchlights.

The problem with the flash is that it has given harsh catchlights (the sharp pinpoints in the eyes) and in the third shot, also a harsh shadow under the chin.

Since you have such willing models, I'd suggest doing some backlight practice -- it's such a great tool for a bright sunny day.
