I look for catchlights all the time too! :D

I had to laugh the other day when Id finished printing the pic of my sons girlfriend.
I asked what he thought and he said ...
'Hmmm! I quite like it ... well apart from those white squares in her eyes, that is!' :bonk:

I think thats why I dont like watching films much anymore. I am always watching the technical side more than following the story, always miss jokes and vital plot lines as they have just done a really tricky panning shot or something :(

aren't circular catchlights meant to be preferable?

Yep, normally, we like to see the catchlight as the sun in someone's eyes, which is why I use only one catchlight (I can't stand seeing 2!) and an octagonal softbox (as it's close to round)

As a tog MD, looking at others' images and trying to figure them out is a great way to learn - I 'read' all my wife's mags just looking at the images (the text is way too crap to bother with in women's mags:LOL:)

Many of the more pleasing images are those taken with only 1 main light. I've seen make-up type shots showing perfect skin tones but with 2 obvious catchlights and a big square in the lower part of the eye, which destroys it for me as the eyes look so unreal

at the bottom of the item..... click on QUOTE not REPLY

Then after their quote... which ends in [/quote] you add your bit!

Anything you dont want in... if you only want to answer the last line of what they said for instance.......delete the rest... making sure to always keep the first and last "quote" tags in.

double post, sorry!

and catchlights are?????

The little bright spot in their eyes - go look at yourself in a mirror, the mirror (or a light near it) reflected in your eye is the catchlight

In classical portraiture, people were painted near one window hence one catchlight being the window itself as a bright spot in their eyes; this then mirrors what you'd see outside on a sunny day - where the sun is now the catchlight

In studio work, to get more flattering tones, it's often that some togs use several lights in front of the model so these all become catchlights - which to me looks odd (there's only one sun after all!)

And thanks to MD & Janice for the 'how to quote' tip! Cheers

Yeah, my husband (also a photographer) has complained that catchlights have ruined porn for him. ;)

Learning about lighting is ruining Hollyoaks for me. No longer is it about appreciating the fine women in it it's about working out the direction of the lighting and the relative size of the lightsource.

In the nail industry we're taught to look out for the 'line of light' when creating nail extensions.
So, if Im out & see a woman with nail extensions ... I have to check if she has a wonky line of light down the centre of her nail! :cautious:
And now I try to work out the direction/light-source from every pic I look at too!
