I am using Verbatim DVD - to record home made movies through Nero Vision essentials four, which has been working fine. Today i tried to burn another disk and it went through ok then the line which says Total progress stopped and wouldn't move. i then got a notice pop up saying:

'Sorry your compilation cannot be written to this kind of disk. Please insert a disk of the correct type, or modify the settings to make them compatible with the correct disk'.

I am very depressed at the moment, I rang up a friend who says I might have a virus, but I always update my free version of AVG when I switch on. I have never had a problem like this before so I wonder if the CD burner has gone wrong (which I hope not) or whether the disks are faulty. i ave tried two and have come up with the smae result. the guy who made me the computer doesn't live in the area anymore, so i am looking for a PC engineer which is like looking for a needle in haystack

Can anyone advise me please? I am not very computer illiterate and have another video to upload of my time in Cornwall. I knew I shouldn't have got up this morning. Many thanks.

DVD writer drives do go wrong some times and write errors is often one way that they fail. A virus sounds unlikely. (I'd suggest ditching AVG for microsoft security essentials or Avast but that a whole other topic).

Changing a DVD drive is a pretty easy job that even someone not good with computers may be able to do. It should cost less than £20 plus postage. If you want to have a go I'm sure we can tell you what to order.

I might try some other disks in case it is a bad disk, if not then I would have to get a new CD burner which I would have to get someone to fix for me.

You could try some other DVD burning software, doesn't sound like the burner or a virus to me, more like a setting that has been changed

Another idea is do a system restore to a date when you could burn ok, might have lost a driver or an update has messed things up a bit

Can you recommend another DVD burning software? I don't know how to do a system restore, not with out help that is.

If you can handle a screwdriver you could do it yourself. If it frightens you maybe ask around among friends for someone that would know how to do it. No special computer wizard knowledge is required :)

I use this one http://www.imgburn.com/ never had a problem

Not sure what OS you are using, but system restore will be somewhere under Control Panel-System. On Vista its under system protection, but doing a search via the help tab should find it ok.
Very simple, use the wizard, pick a restore point date and it resets itself.

Would suggest you try the burner software first, very simple to use and find it much easier than Nero

Had similar problem with a Dell several years ago. After much "discussion" with Dell support finally convinced them it was the drive. Got them to send me a replacement drive rather than wait for a service engineer. Fitted it in 10 mins.

If you don't feel like opening the computer, and for some people this can be a daunting prospect, simply get an external USB one. They are reasonably cheap. Found a Samsung on Amazon £26.00

If you need the files urgently, pm me for an email address, send them over and I will burn them and send them back by post
