I need help......
Probably missing the obvious but anyways , the old rom gave up the ghost the other day so i sourced one off AV forums ,it arrived today so i stuck it in every thing seems fine ,drawer opens and shuts great ,so i put a CD in and it don't play ,so, i switched off computer then switched on again, and the comp is giving me two options on start up,it reads....

Secondary drive "o" not found

Strike f1 to continue or

f2 to run setup utility

Anyone help me out please :thumbs:
 
What does it show you in the BIOS?
 
You will need to press 'Del' or 'F2' to enter bios when you fire up your pc, in one of the menu's you will find a list of the drives.
 
Is it an IDE drive ? ( big wide data cable )
You may have to set the jumper on the back of the drive so its reconised corectly.

Yeh there's the flat wide cable going in at the back of the drive ,but i can't find the jumper on the back of the drive ,also in the BIOS it's telling me CD DVD-rom is not installed ,and when i try to install it the comp's asking me to insert cd which i don't have :bang::bang:
 
If the CD drive doesn't show up in the bios, theres no chance it'll show up in windows. Have a look at the back of your old drive, there should be a jumper that will let you select master, slave or cable select. You will need to set your new drive the same as the old one.

Exactly.

What drive have you bought ?
Try googling the make of drive followed by " jumper settings"

Failing that Take a pic of the back of the drive and post it up

Been away all afternoon so i wasn't ignoring ya :D

drive is exactly the same as the old one


Sony... CD-R/RW/DVD-ROM CRX310EE

I'm thinking now that the replacement drive is a dud ,because i remember taking the old one in and out a few times and it always worked despite the sticking door .Thats what you get for thinking i had a bargain :cuckoo:

What we are interested in is section 3 Master/Slave Select Connector, on your old drive there will be what looks like a piece of plastic connected to either 1 and 4, 2 and 5 or 3 and 6 take that off and put in the same position on the new drive. they should be labelled master, slave or cable select

You mentioned in post #6 that you couldnt find any jumper, if its missing that will explain why the drive is not being reconised.

You say the drive is identical, Can you confirm the drive actually has the jumper in place by comparing the two and with the picture in the link of the above post.

Duh i'm a dork :D.. found the jumper ,have now fitted it in the same position as old one (it was was in different position as old one ).now all i need is software to install it ... :thumbs:

You mean its still not being detected ?

Unless you are still running an old version of windows, 3.1 or 95 for example, you shouldn't need software to install it, drives are usually detected " as is " This is assuming you are even running windows
What OS are you running ?

XP windows and it has recognized the new driver,everything works bar the burning of a CD .

Can i say that i'm very impressed by the amount of helpful advise given to me by you guys on here :clap::clap: Than you very much:)
