What's the score as far as taking pics of celebrities at such places as stage doors or fete openings etc., and then placing them on my own website? I must point out that the pics would be taken with their consent and in no way candid etc. Also, would I be entitled to offer these pictures for sale?

In public it's fine...you may have to fight for space with other 'paps' though...
Yes you can as you own the copyright on images you have taken...

As long as it isn't cher or bjork, you'll be fine.

You can use them for your own use (website) or on display in a gallery, but not for sale.

Although they're your images with your copyright, they own their image (their own copyright if you will). Model release will let you do what you want or you can sell for editorial use, but that's about it :)

then how do paps make there money?

You don't need model releases to sell to the media ;)
(Try getting a model release from an entire football statium ;) )

Your 2 posts don't go together, how is selling photos to the media different to selling them elsewhere.

Right, rather than reading websites that may or may not be relevant let's say that as someone who has done "door-stepping" (and FYI, it's crap, and I hate it) that if you have done your own research and you're in the right place and right time, then you can place the photos on your www and sell them for editorial usage.

You CANNOT sell them for commercial...as trust me, the celebs will sue you for a lot if they see your image as an advert.

If you rely on other people to tell you where to go and what time, then you may be in a slightly more difficult situation where you're splitting any money you earn with your fixer/finder.

However, I would also say that unless you're getting "gynae" shots of a princess then you're unlikely to make a penny from this. There are guys out there who have this so sewn up it's not even worth it (look at bigpictures.com)
