CF card compatibility

As it was getting quite difficult to buy 1gb cards at low prices, I decided to get a Transcend 4gb (133x) card which arrived today. Now given I'm using a Canon 10D (128mb was the default card IIRC back then) I was wondering if there is a compatibility issue? It seems to be very slow writing to the card, even formating is very slow, with my 1gb card taking less than 2 seconds but the Transcend limps along at a leisurely 30 seconds! All my other cards are Dane-elec or Viking (cheap & cheerful) and are both faster writing and retrieving images.

I've been informed that the 10d doesn't support cards greater than 2gb, can anyone else confirm this - there are indications of this on the web, but nothing really concrete IMO?

And if this is indeed so, anyone want to swap a few 1 & 2gb cards for a used once Transcend 4gb one?

Indeed I had quite a long conversation with a techie' about FAT16 (32kb clusters) vs 32 (4kb clusters) & buffer clearing rates &...:thinking: and it would seem that up to 2GB the on-board software will format to FAT16 above that to FAT32. Anyway the upshot is that no matter how fast the 4GB card it will always be slower (on the 10D) than the slowest 1 or 2GB card - that is unless I do some form of fudge on the PC to increase the cluster size on the cards.

I presume you have formatted the card in the camera and this didn't make any difference.

Yes, that's where the format times (1GB <2 seconds vs. 4GB 30 seconds) came from. The card does work fine in the camera but is really too slow for my liking.

Maybe the new card is trying to tell you something......................time to upgrade your body? :shrug:

Can't think of a single reason why I'd want to do that and certainly not just to use a bigger CF card. Unlike many, I tend to buy once and use for as long as possible. I'm not a pro, so don't need the 'edge' or lust after the latest gimmicks, most important thing for me is build quality/longevity. I started out with 128mb cards and I'm still using them quite happily along with 256/512 and 1GB ones - it's just they cost as much as 1/2/4GB cards now, so i got a 4GB one.
