CF card for 7D?

Hi all. I am imminently purchasing a 7d and would like some advice on the best Cf cards to purchase. I am asking this mainly because my current camera uses SD cards and the two I have are Sandisk and Samsung. Both the same spec but the Samsung blinds the Sandisk performance wise. The Cf cards vary hugely in price and I don't want to spend where I don't have to! Thanks in advance
 
You can buy an adaptor to convert your current SD cards to CF cards. I have CF cards which I use on the 7D and also have an adaptor to enable me to use the SD cards as well. I cannot say I have noticed a lot of difference speed wise.

I just got my first CF card. I ordered a Lexar x800 16GB as it seemed the best balance of cost, speed (write speed and read speed) and also a name I have heard of. Was about £36 from Amazon and then another £19 for the card reader.

I've heard bad things about the SD adaptors and them being slow so I didn't bother considering one.
 
Don't invest lots of money in the latest super fast cards. And bare in mind that the headline speed of 800x or whatever is largely irrelevant- this is the read speed, and it's the write speed that matters.
Personally I'd stick to established brands like sandisk, samsung, lexar- but there's a few people on here that are happy with their 7 day shop cards.
Incidentally fixation sell 2nd Canon gear with vat on.
 
I use a mixture of Sandisk and Lexar cards, mostly Sandisk. Most are from the Extreme or Extreme Pro ranges and I've never been disappointed. Card reader I use a Lexar USB3 reader which I am also pleased with.

I don't think that it is fair to judge something on hearsay and post negative comments when you have not used one personally. I have got and used an adaptor and in my view there is no speed loss. Read the Amazon reviews and most buyers speak highly of them.

At the price they are there is not much to lose in buying one. If you don't like it you can always return it.

Possibly, but then I've heard it more than once so there must be something to it. Also if it was to fail and take my images with it you just know it would be the once in the lifetime shot that went.

CF isn't that expensive really unless you go for the big fast cards. You don't need the biggest and fastest unless you're going to fill your buffer all the time. That said have a look at various speeds, I went with the 800x as it was only £3-4 more than the slower card so I figured why not.

And memory cards don't fail?

From what I have read adaptors have no internal components to go wrong. They simply have metal connections from the CF pins to the SD pins. Whereas memory cards have quite a few internal components including flash memory and there is much more that can go wrong. We all have different points of view and I would not suggest the OP does not buy at least one CF card. I am simply saying that with an adaptor he can utilise his SD cards and save splashing out too much money unnecessarily.

I have never had a problem with my adaptor and have used it regularly.

This is exactly what I've done as well :)

Lexar owned by Micron so you know what flash memory is in your card, but it's cheaper than a comparable Sandisk. Whether or not i actually need a 800x card is another matter :p
 
SD-CF adapters are great if you don't want speed.

Best bang-for-buck is probably a Transcend 400x card. The 7D write speed tops out at around 50 MB/s, so anything faster is a waste. Personally I'd get a 32GB or two.

I didn't think about the max camera write speed, and I did consider the 400x. Maybe I'll grab some as extra cards.
 
I use sandisk extreme
but my main CF card is another company...really can't recall the name. ...begins with a D but will find out.

anything fairly quick with UDMA on it should be great for the 7D I would have thought.
the new integral ones have a good price point

I use these and can't fault them, excellent in the camera and when connected to a USB3 card reader rapid at transferring files off to server storage.
 
I use a mixture of Sandisk Extreme and Transcend 400x. The Sandisk ones are great but cost a fair whack. All the transcend ones I have were bought in the various Amazon sales - big savings, good cards and you know they are genuine. The only card I've had fail was a Lexar, to be fair it may have been my fault by overcramming the card, but since then I've never used Lexar and always change cards with at least 25 shots left.

And I use either a Sony USB3 card reader, or a thunderbolt hybrid cable straight off the camera.

Thanks for all the input guys. However I'm going to go the whole hog and get a 5d mk iii so won't have to worry about it anymore.
 
Hi Muzzieman I also use sandisk extreme for both my 7d and 5d mkiii, they can take the same cards
 
Muzzieman, I just got a 7D a few weeks back and had a couple of older 2gb Sandisk extreme 3 cards still so am using them and also purchased a Lexar 8gb pro 800x card also.
