Hi, I recently bought a 30D and without looked I installed the CF card wrong, my own damn fault D:, and a pin has been bent.
I was wondering does anyone know any stores in london that would fix this cheaply as possible? and any methods of fixing this myself.

Thanks in advance ^_^

I HAVE DONE IT! I'm so happy I'm going to cry xD

trying to bend it back into shape, it may break off and cause shorting inside the camera. Get it sent to a recognised Canon repairer. Colchester Cameras (not in London) are good. Fixation is in London.

It's not a DIY job, you run the risk of the pin breaking off and dropping down into the camera and shorting it out if you try and straighten it.

You'll probably be looking at £100+ to get it sorted professionally too.....

100+? oh damn.. . .Guess this goes in the closet.. .

This is depressing I'm gonna go cry in a corner D:

My boss did this with his brand new 350D when he first got it. He bent it back himself but I dont think I'd be trying it to be honest.

Does anyone know where to get replacement parts? I'll try and disassemble and reassembling myself.

but £100+ . .... I can't afford that as a student at the moment D:

If you cant afford to get it fixed proffessionally then you might as well try to bend it back into position manually first. If that fails your screwed anyway as I doubt you'll be able to take it apart and reassemble unless you happen to be an electrical engineer.

It depends on how badly bent out of shape it is. If its only just out of alignment then you have more chance of straightening it before it goes too brittle and snaps completely off. If its over at right angles then its going to snap before you get it vertical enough.

What if you break the camera further which means it is no longer repairable, or the repair cost increases more?

Fair point ahh.... was really enjoying the camera :/

I think I'll try gathering money or find someone then :'(

I had this with my first 400d.
I just bent it back myself with a pair of small long nose pliers.

Entirely up to you if you want to try, but if you do just make sure your batteries are out.

I wish I got the 450D now ¬_¬ I hate you CF card!

I seem to think they have guides anyway to make it really difficult to put them in the wrong way round. Then again maybe thats just on the Nikon.

I just noticed one of the pins is slightly longer than the others is this meant to be?

I did this a while back and straightened the pin with a pair of long nose pliers.

My lad did this with his 400D in the first week he had it. £140 repair, they replaced the main board

I believe canon's fee is pretty standard for this - cost me £125 for replacing the CF unit (I had a slightly different problem) but they told me they charge everone the same for this type of defect.

personally I'd very slowly bend it back up - if it breaks you are not really worse off.

"Wrong way round" - are Nikon's that bad

I'm wondering what make of card the OP uses and whether budget cards are made to slacker tolerances resulting in more play between the insertion guides.

I've never had a problem, but I've always bought from the top end of the SanDisk range right from the vintage times when Ultra was the top spec. I knew too many people who lost images on budget cards hence have always played safe.

I did this to my Fuji S2 on maybe... day 2 of ownership... Managed to tease it back into position with some fine tweezers. The trick is to use slow but pressured movement so that you get it into position on attempt number 1. Metal "Work hardens" which means the more you wiggle it, the harder it gets before finally it snaps instead of bending. If you move slowly but accurately in one movement, you can avoid this unfortunate situation.

The amount by which you've bent the pin will also play a role. if it's 90 degrees out of whack then you may well be out of luck, but if it's just slightly misaligned then your chance of success is much higher.

Of course, all done at your own risk, usual disclaimers apply, but personally I didn't find it to be a particularly tricky operation.

I have Sandisk ultra, I was just in a rush didn't look when I inserted the card.

Thanks - that's unlikely to be the problem then :)
One of my friends is an electronics geek - I know he successfully straightened out a CF pin for someone. So it's very doable.
As suggested earlier - take the battery out first
I'll add - best be sober too ;)

The 30D is a better camera than the 450D especially if you have bigger hands. Money is short so, as a couple of others have said it's probably worth your while having a go yourself if the pin is not severely bent, i.e. at right angles. Depending how far down the pins are you could use long nose pliers or as I've done in the past a wooden cocktail stick. Gently move the pin a wee bit at a time until it's as close to the right place as you can get then try fitting a cf card. Don't try to do it all in one go.

I've done it but the card still does not go in, does I can't remember exactly but is the CF card meant to go easily in? I'm not going to force it in.

if its still not going in then it may be that the pin still isnt in alignment or that other pins are out of line also. If they all look pretty straight and its a new camera just take it back to where you purchased from and say the card slots faulty :naughty: Could be argued the pins were out of alignment when you got the camera.

You shouldnt need to force it should be same resistance as if you were putting the CF card into a reader. You sure the CF card isnt blocked somewhere

If you do try to repair it yourself, make sure you remove the battery & button cell first, should prevent any short circuits, feel sorry for you, good luck :)

Thanks guys , I've fixed it now ^_^
