CF Cards

Hi,

Just a quick question - for professionals who use the Canon 5D Mark II, when shooting weddings/events/anything in a professional context do you generally shoot at the highest image quality available in RAW which gives about 25mb an image or do you tend go for the next onedown which is 11mb? Ken Rockwell (love him or hate him) says you can't tell the difference and in actual fact the 11mp camera provides sharper images in RAW...

Secondly, in light of the fact that I really want to utilise my video capability I have offered to video a sports day for my company in HD, which will be used for corporate purposes even though it's not too serious and so I need to review my CF card situation.

Anyone out there who shoots video on the 5D Mark II able to offer advice on the best CF card to get that balances quality and value? I will probably be shooting a couple of hours footage out of the whole day so I would like to know what cards people use in their video workflow if possible.

I currently have a Lexar Professional 8gb 300x CF.

Many thanks for any input you may have!

I can't answer all the points but I've had problems with cheaper (fake?) cards when videoing with a 7D, the buffer fills up as the card cannot write as fast as it should.
I'm not a fan of RAW but if shooting a wedding I would use it, and the largest file size too.
8gb sounds to small to end up with a couple of hours of video.

Ok.. I visited the computer fair here in London today (Just off TCR)

Without any doubt every single "KIngston" card of any type was FAKE. Its a very simple mistake. The cardboard they use is not the same "sandwich" (ie. the amount of layers ) and can be seen when holding the packaging side ways .

so i would be very worried if you see a Kingston for sale.

7D just arrived, which cards for video? Brand? Size?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated,
Jim

Pretty much the info I need, especially for shooting video!

I use sandisk Extreme IV 45MB/s 8gig cards for my high quality stuffI have used them for video aswell without a glitch
I was told for the video you need fast cards
Raw always shoot in raw it amazing what you can do in the proscessing stages and I mean you can do a lot more than jpegs
ohh forget to mention mine a 5dMKII

Cool info. How much footage can you shoot on the 8gig?

5dMKII never tried to fill a card but 14mins is long enough unless it on a tripod

You can get about 15 mins at the highest quality settings from a 4Gb CF Card and 24 mins from the lower quality. After that the camera with stop recording until the card has cooled off........................or so its says in the manual.

Ok, I can work with this. I could use my cards alternatively and shoot 15 minute sequences at a time for the video shoot I'm doing.

Actually on this, are CF/SD cards effective in terms of write speed? I've got loads of 4gig SD cards, it would be a waste not to use them unless they would hinder my recording.

You were told wrong. 7D manual says you need around 8MB/s to shoot video. Even the slowest of the (genuine) cards available tody can beat that.

Unless you're regularly waiting for the red light to disappear, or you've got a fast CF reader (i.e., not USB) then anything faster than 30 MB/s is almost certainly wasted.
