CF speed query

Afternoon all,

First post - so hello! Brief question regarding CF's. I'm using a Canon 400D and want a new and higher capcity CF. I know the cameras read/write speed is not the fastest so if I were to buy a new CF with a higher read/write speed would I still be able to use it in my camera?

My thought on the matter is that I would be able to just I won't have the benefit of the extra speed from using in my camera but I will in transfer a little - as I'm only using USB 2! I'm likely to buy a Sandisk probably a 16GB just wanted some advice on speeds etc =)

Thanks to all in advance

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Using a higher speed CF card will not gain you anything in the camera, but may well improve the download speed, depending on the quality of the card reader.

I thought (but I'm not 100% so someone may know different) that a faster card gave you a faster write-speed so while your camera won't take anymore frames per second, what you do take will write to the card quicker so should therefore reduce the time you're waiting for the buffer to clear

Very possibly but even shooting high speed bursts on my 7D, I've never had to wait for the buffer to clear using an 8GB Sandisk Ultra 30MB/s so there's no way a 400D (incidentally my old camera) is going to have that problem :)

Even shooting HD video on the 7D the 30MB/s card doesn't seem to have a problem.

Is that not a higher-speed card though?

Thanks for everyone's comments and thought's on this, really appreciate the help! =)

I disagree, I had a 400d and used Sandisk Extreme III 30MB/s cards. Shooting RAW you can fill the buffer, I did it a few times.

Lamps - I suspect the card you have already exceeds the maximum write speed of a 400d so while a faster card will work in the camera I doubt it will make any difference to the camera buffering. It may help get your pictures onto your computer faster though.

[FONT="Arial]Thanks for your comments SixToes, that what I was aiming for really, I'm not very bothered about buffer speeds, as long as I have a decent card (which as I said will more than likely be a Sandisk) and a decent capcity then read/write speed to my computer is a bonus! =)

Thanks all again!
