CF to PC - slow?

When I use a USB2.0 card reader to copy photos to my PC why is it so slow, 2.71mb/sec, just done 350mb and it took a couple of minutes.

Surely I should be getting 20+ mb/sec, it's a Sandisk extreme 60mb/sec card and USB2 can handle 26mb/sec sustained.

What type of speeds is everyone else getting?
 
I use two card readers. One cost about £30 and is fairly large and needs a cable to plug into USB2.0. The other was about £8 and looks more like a funny shaped USB2.0 memory card with a CF slot.

The expensive one is always about 4 x faster.

Also try and plug your card reader into the back of your computer or straight into a laptop instead of via a hub if you use one.
 
My cheap card reader (USB2) only gave me 3.5 mb a sec, just got a usb 3 that gives me over 100 mb a sec. It is bound to be the card reader at fault like neil g said :).

I assume the camera directly attached should always give good speeds?

Is it a Desktop or a Laptop?

Not sure about a desktop but I use a Lexar Professional Expresscard CF Reader - here in my Laptop and Duracell 16gb 600x CF cards

Gives me 90MB/s consistently and makes a hell of a difference :)
 
Update: I ordered a Lexar Expresscard CF reader..........oh HELLO 50mb/sec, it's awesomely fast.

£20 well spent.
 
I've got a USB 3.0 internal multi card reader with 3 USB ports and the cards are very fast when put through that. My cards are Duracell rated up to 60MB/sec and I regularly get that or above (depending what's running) when used. IIRC it was around £35 and well worth it for backing up to an external drive with USB 3.0.
