Hi Guys,

Ok so the situation....

A friend brought a corrupt memory card into me with some important images on it. The card error was the Nikon 'CHA' error which resulted in my MacBook not recognising it in the SD card slot OR off any memory card reader I have. After much talking I tested wiping my CF card (formatting in-camera) and recovering that....this worked and so we set about formatting the problem card and trying recovery. However the formatting in the Nikon D90 is not fixing the CHA error. The main issue is that any recovery software I have can't even scan it because the computers not 'seeing' the card.

Any suggestions please????

Not sure you'll have much chance of recovering the images if you've formatted the card, that's the one thing they tell you not to do....

I have seen that

Reseating the card in the camera may help - I have a card that regularly does that, and I have come to the conclusion it is the connectors

Also.. oddly, I have a cheap and natty CF reader, that has no tech in it, and seems to read cards that my camera or PC wont (very odd). Try a very basic USB reader, one with nice long pins!

should be fine as long as you dont put data back onto the card. formatting generally only wipes the database of files on the media so the device/computer thinks its empty and can reuse the space. the actual data is still there and can be recovered. putting data back onto the media will overwrite the data however.

Rescue Pro (as supplied with SanDisk cards) has no problems retrieving files from formatted cards. Can't get them back from cards that have been wiped with the data destroying application thst's on the same disk though.

If it can't be read by the camera or card reader could it be a problem with the contacts on the card?

No make on it :/ they got it off eBay unfortunately

Write it off as a lesson learned in buying el-cheapo no-name brands from fleabay instead of all the stress trying to get retrieve photos from a broken and probably dodgy card .
Tell your friend if they are taking important photos then make sure they are using a reliable brand.
