Change to VR?

I currently use a Nikon 18-135 on my D90 and sometimes struggle to get a sharp image, particularly when attemting to focus at almost infinity distances, and I'm hoping it's me and not the camera or the lens. I'm wondering if I should consider trading the 18-135 for an 18-105VR as I probably wouldn't miss the extra focal length. LCE are selling the 18-105 for £189 and say my 18-135 may be worth £100 in part exchange.
I did try the VR version in the shop, albeit on a D7000 and it seemed fine, unfortunately I didn't have my lens with me to compare. I know I should use my tripod all the time but it isn't always convenient.
What do members think, would it be worth spending the extra £89?
 
I would say if you are getting a fast enough shutter speed - VR is not really needed.

And VR should be off anyway if you use a tripod.

maybe invest in a monopod?
 
Do you know why your images are not sharp? Is it that you're not using a fast enough shutter speed? If that is the case, VR will help but you get sharper shots at low shutter speeds, but you may well be able to get the results you want with your current lens by either opening the aperture up a bit or boosting the ISO so that you can get shutter speed right up. At 135mm, you ought to be aiming for at least 1/200 s.
