changing from sony to canon, 40/50d or 5dmk1?

for a while now i've been thinking about changing from sony to canon for the bulk of my photography. my main aim for the future is to go semi-pro by the end of next year and i'm afraid that sony won't be able to provide the body that i'll need so shortly after christmas i'll be looking for a tidy used example of either:
40d
50d
5dmk1
i've been following prices on here and on ebay to get a rough idea of prices and £500-600 seems to be about the average for a decent one. the 60d is going for £850-ish but that's a bit too much at the minute.

obviously the 5d with the full-frame sensor might be the front runner in most peoples eyes, but i've heard very good things about the 40d and 50d respectively. so i'm looking for input from any current or previous owners of any of these, especially anyone who has made the switch from sony.

is there much of a jump from the 40/50d to the mk1 5d?

also what is the lens compatabilty with the canon lenses between the crop and full frame sensor bodies? am i right in thinking that ef-s lenses won't work on a full frame body?

All lenses (EF and EF-s) work on APS-C, only EF work on FF.


The most important question:

What type of photography are you doing?

For things that require speed, the 40/50D seem like winners, for anything else, I'd have the 5DMk1
 
i got a 2nd user 5d mk 1 a short while ago and i love it
the iq is s better than my 30d
im guessing for portraits the 5 d will win hands down. although you need to feed it good glass

there's a lot of love for the 5d i see. getting both a 5d and a xxd as a backup is looking more attractive each time i think about it, but i'll have to break it to the other half gently lol.

there will be a couple of fast primes purchased to compliment whatever is bought. i'm already looking at a nifty fifty and a tamron 17-50mm 2.8 to get me started though, the rest can come with time.

do you mean the canon efs 17-55 2.8
if so that wont work with the 5d as its an efs lens, crop sensor only

sorry just read your post again. tamron 17-50
same problem though, crop sensors only
 
have you looked at the sigma 24-70 2.8, you can still get older copys i think gen 2s, for about £350 - £400
 
I made the leap from Sony to Canon last year and haven't regretted it at all.....although I still think Sony make the best entry level DSLR's!!

If you don't need the fps of the xxD cameras, then the 5D wins everytime for me. The IQ is better, and the ISO performance edges it too. However, if you're on a budget, the 40D is a great camera, and the money saved could go towards some lenses.....including the ridiculously good for the money Tamron 17-50mm f2.8, which I've found sharper wide open at 50mm, than a stopped down 50mm f1.8 prime!

Whatever you choose, I doubt you'll be dissapointed with the Canon system.....for me, it's leaps ahead of Sony! :thumbs:
