I currently have a Canon 40D together with several lenses which give me perfectly good pictures, provided I take the camera with me. Unfortunately I rarely do. I like walking but don't like carrying.

So I have decided that I need to either give up photography or change my gear (and the first isn't really an option). As far as I can see my options are either go for a superzoom compact such as the SX30 or something like the NEX-5 with interchangeable lenses.

I like the idea of the superzoom, but from looking at these they all have pros and cons, the most noticeable con to me being the lack of RAW files. The main exception to this seems to be the Leica, but am not keen to pay virtually double the price of the Panasonic FZ100 for that one feature.

The compact systems however look more promising, but the cost is considerably more (though once I have sold the DSLR kit it should cover what I need).

Anyone else gone down this path and have some advice as to what is worth considering?

The NEX-5 would be the right size for you, small'ish with good image quality.;)
 
I have a couple of compacts that I use when I can't be bothered to take the SLR, but I'd never bail out of the SLR altogether.

FWIW, I am still using a Canon G2 that can produce RAW files. Does the latest G (11?) not also have this feature?
 
Try a different strap, a bag or something like the cotton carrier system (the lite version). It will make carrying your camera a lot easier.

Sold all my dslr gear (£4K's worth), bought a Canon bridge superzoom and pretty much regretted it straight after.

Think very carefully before doing this, because its expensive buying all your gear back again.
 
Thanks for the comments. The Nex-5 is one that I've been looking at, though like the idea of the of the Leica lenses on the Panasonic. Think I have definitely ruled out the bridge cameras and I am sure I would regret it if that was all I had. The compact camera systems however do allow for changes in lenses, and some of them use the same size sensor as some DSLRs.

The main problem with things like the Canon G series is the maximum limit of the lens, which is why I was originally looking at the bridge superzooms. I suppose eventually they will add RAW to the sperzooms but wonder why they haven't already.

The main problem with new bags/straps etc is that I suffer from arthritis, and know I wouldn't carry it whatever the bag. Good suggestion though :)
 
Another consideration might be the micro four-thirds cameras from Olympus and Panasonic. The Oly PEN range seems to have been well recieved - and the stuff coming from Panasonic is looking good too.

Personally I've not got either, but have been reading with interest as I might look at investing sometime in the near future.

Just a thought.

Take a look at the G Series thread.

The Panasonic / Olympus offerings give good image quality, manual control and portability. Buy One Today! :)
