Chargebacks on debit cards

If i purchase anything using paypal, Paypal withdraws money directly from my account.

I have not had any bad experiences yet but im thinking with the recent scams that have been going on when purchasing gear on this and other forums i've decided to change this so that paypal uses my debit card instead of withdrawing from my bank account. I have decided that from now on i will only use my debit card and never pay using paypal gift.

I do have a credit card but it has a limit of £300 so i cant really use it. What im not sure of is if a transaction does go wrong, would i be able to issue a chargeback on my debit card? The card is a VISA debit card.

Thanks in advance.

I don't let PayPal debit direct from my bank account for exactly the reasons you mention. I do use a credit card instead rather than a debit card, as it does give me some extra protection.

I issued a chargeback on my Debit Card a couple of years ago and that was for around £1,500 (stolen property) - my bank immediately recovered my money through Paypal and the original owner got their property back from me.
Paypal uses a Direct Debit to withdraw money from your bank and although there is a 'Direct Debit Guarantee' I'm not sure that it would give you any greater protection than for your debit card.
Your most safe method would be to use get the bank to increase your credit card limit and use that, if you are really worried.
On a side note, I don't remember there being any rash of scams on this forum?

Pedant Mode : you've got a Debit card not a Credit card.

These usually have a limit of however much is in your account, not a fixed amount though...and you also have a lot less protection than a credit card - if you get scammed or your details stolen, its up to you to prove the fault - Basically the combination means never use a Debit card online!

We've had two credit cards used by fraudsters in the past month - no connection between which sites or computers they were used on. Both times the credit card company contacted us and that was then end of the story. If it had been a debit card, first we would have known would be on a bank statement and then no end of hassle to try and get the money back.

As for Paypal - it works in the Buyer's favour (unless using Gift), and there are numerous cases of Seller's being ripped-off by Buyers who know how to exploit Paypal's ****-poor systems and leaving Seller's out of pocket by thousands. Paypal is not a bank, there is no oversight or regulation - I would never use it for anything I can't afford to lose (e.g. under £100), quite apart from their fees...

Not all banks pass the buck on Debit Card fraud - I've had 3 instances where my card details have been used fraudulently and my bank were very pro-active, calling me to question the transactions and refusing them when I confirmed that they were fraudulent - not Paypal issues then though.

One thing you can be sure of though is it won't be PayPal (Ebay) left holding the baby, if anyone is losing out you can be sure it won't be them!

I have an O2 money card that I use for paypal, eb*y etc. If I buy anything I transfer money to the O2 card to cover it. That way there is only ever a small amount on the card when not being used for a purchase and no one has access to either my bank account or my debit card.

I've had 2 strange debits which I didn't recognise on my Bank Account (Debit card payments) & both times my Bank have refunded the items after getting me to sign a form confirming I knew nothing about them

The credit card protection is enshrined in the CCA, but the protection offered under VISA's chargeback scheme is now as good as the CCA offers for credit cards. I wouldn't think of that as a reason for not using a debit card
