Hello,

Basically will be doing some filming this summer with the 7D and will be looking for some cheap lenses to use on.

Just looking for old lenses really that will fit my 7D, convertor maybe, and good quality. Doesn't matter if its manual focus or aperture.

Any certain brands or lenses i should look at. Preferably looking for some cheap wide ones.

Any spring to mind, let me know.

as similar questions usually receive.............

1..adapter without internal lens = no focus to infinity
2...adapter with internal lens = loss of IQ

however many moons ago, somebody posted some shots with FD lens and infinity adapter

IMO they weren't too bad

I don't know if it's worth getting a Tamron adaptall lens which you can convert to EOS without any glass while retaining infinity focus.

Incidentally, might be worth checking to see if the 7D has a switch on the mount (about 10 o'clock as you face the mount) as if that's tripped by the mounted lens you might get an error 01 (don't know if this occurs during video). Easily resolved with some mount surgery (on the adapter). So don't let that put you off!
 
How wide do you want? Because there aren't many really wide old lenses.

Anything in pentax K, olypmus OM, contax/yashica, M42 or nikon F mount will work fine manually with a no-optic adaptor (with the exception of newer nikon G series lenses that require a more expensive novoflex adaptor for aperture control because of the lack of aperture ring, but none of these are old anyway)

I have an old pentax K mount cosina 24mm f/2.8 which is pretty good. It's built like a yoghurt pot but the optics are great and it's very lightweight. Probably go for around £40, though I haven't checked any prices recently and it depends on condition + £10 or £20 for a K-EOS adaptor (with or without focus confirm chip)
The vivitar 28mm f/2.8 is a well renowned performer (particularly the ones with serial numbers beginning in 28------- so I'm told.)

The pentax SMC 50mm f/1.7 might be good for filming, the manual focus ring is very smooth on mine.

Ahh, i have a canon 28mm, thought there might f been something a tad lower.

Cheers for the little list as well, will be looking on shebay tomoz for some. Know anything good say 85mm plus that i should keep an eye out for.

Cheers will look into that. Nothing at 10 oclock but it does have a little something at 3

I believe the jupiter 11a 135mm f/4 is well renowned?

I'm no expert on this, give manualfocus-g a PM, he's good to talk to about M42 lenses.

If you want something fast there's the takumar 50mm f/1.4 SMC.
Should be very nice for manual focus.

can anyone explain the difference to me as to what a film lens is as opposed to a not a film lens ?? im just trying to work out what the original post was asking ,,,film lens on a 7d ,,i thought the 7d was a digital ( ? ) why not just use the lenses you have ?

There are a lot of SLR film makers who pick up the older lens, manual aperture/focus for video purposes as you dont need auto so was just looking for some old manual lenses that go cheap i could use as well my kit atm as i could do with some wider and maybe a longer focal lengths.
 
The focus on older lenses is so much better, as in the 'throw' or distance the focus ring rotates between minimum focus distance and infinity. On the older lenses you can rotate the ring all the way around or even more plus its a smooth 'buttery' movement as compared to the clunky 90 degrees or less movement of the new lenses.

I'v done some FD to EF conversions and the lenses maintain infinity focus without any loss of IQ and since you now have full aperture control as well as focus and zoom if its not a prime.

cheers for that , i took it literaly ,,filming / film ,,,but its making movies with the 7d .,,,mind you it still dont seem right to me making movies with a stills camera ( ok i know they're not ) best go and check me birth certificate i must be older than i thought :)
 
It all the rage these days, all the cool kids are doing it :p

Actually with the recent advances over the last few years the quality is gettting better and better and soon enough we'l have have some decent dynamic range, high ISO low noise and film will be bye bye and thats not a slur on film or anything so all you oldies can stop waving those walking sticks about and shouting "in my day..." and "well I never..." etc etc
 
Until digital looks like film, I'll still be shooting the stuff. As for lenses for video, Well you've had a pretty good rundown of available mounts, do you have a prticular focal length or shooting style in mind?

Cheers for that, what make is the 135mm..?? Canon.? And how much did you manage to get it for..?

The 28mm looks nice but i have a 28mm 1.8 atm.

I was looking for something below 28mm, or 85mm and above.

Yes filming with the likes of the 7D, 5D, 60D and 550D are amazing. With the choice of changeable lens that normal video cameras dont offer, its a huge advantage and the quality is amazing.
