wanting to try out a fisheye lens, do cheap lenses like this actually work with slr cameras? i'm assuming they thread into the end of a standard lens, they look like they're designed for camcorders and in my experience those lenses don't work with slrs, or you have to use so many stepup rings it's not woth the effort. I know it's a cheap lens so the quality etc wouldn't be amazing but add a bit of variety to my photography for not alot of cash, which is a plus. otherwise i'd concider buying one of these bad boys i'd love a more expensive tamron or even sony lens with auto focus but as an amateur hobbyist i couldnt justify the extra costs. experience and suggestions please :) sony A200 camera before i get canon nikon lens sugggestions :D

I always found true fish-eyes a bit of a novelty...
Better to hire one if you need one than waste a fortune on something you use once a year - if that...

I would agree (obviously!), but Matt said he didn't want Canon/Nikon suggestions. And, funnily enough, hiring DSLR lenses is a Canon/Nikon thing. There's nowhere in the UK (to the best of my knowledge) where it's possible to hire lenses for Sony cameras.

Sorry Matt. But welcome to TP anyway.

There is the old saying of 'buy cheap, buy twice'. The cheap lens may be OK for seeing if you like fisheye photography but if you do then you'll end up buying the better lens anyway. Have you had a look on ebay for a second hand lens? At least if you buy second hand then find you don't use the lens much you can sell it on again at about the same price.

I've got one of the x .42 thingies.

The absolute quality may not be the best, but for the price of them how can you go wrong? Mine has paid for itself by being fun.

If you want quality you have to buy a proper lens.

their crap, but for some applications they may be what you want. if you could get one that didnt give the black circle then i think I'd grab one, but circler fisheye + poor quality doesnt cut it at any price for me.

I agrre with most of what has been said :plusone: But, have a look at the Raynox lenses, not a true fisheye, but they do a very wide angle lens (or, they did!) and I find the Raynox quite good quality (for the price).
