The missus is keen on us actually printing out some of my photography for the house (and as crimbo presents for relatives) so I'm looking towards an A3 or A3+ printer. I currently have one of those combos - an Epson RX420 - which has done well for the £90 I paid four years ago but I'd prefer larger format to see me moving forward. I don't need a scanner and memory card slots etc aren't essential; I'll be printing via LR and CS3.

I'm not brand loyal (although I've mainly used Epson's for years) but it has to be cheap to run and work well with my mac.

I know I'll be looking at around £250 upwards for a printer for this paper size - WE is doing the Canon IX4000 for that price. I've read a few posts on here about Epson 2000-series but they seem way past my budget at £500+. I know jack about modern printers so a bit of a heads up on what printers are good and why you recommend them would be nice. :)

£259.99 will bag you an Epson 1400 which I have reviewed in the reviews section and reckon is great.

Be aware though that printing A3 and upwards uses a LOT of ink so budget for a CISS to go with whatever printer you choose.

Only go for the CISS if you're going to save enough in ink in the first year to cover the price of the printer/replacement print head.

If the print nozzles block and you can't clear them, we can tell if you've used a CISS and the warranty is void.

The Photo 1400 is a great unit for the budget though.

In my experience after 10-12 A3+ prints the carts were looking seriously low, at £60 a set it wouldn't take long to save the price of a new printer. I've not had a blocked head on an Epson printer for years but previous Epsons have been very easy to clear either with a cleaning cart or manually.

That's about right for the first set, you should get more from each set after that. I agree with you about how quickly you can recoup the costs, if you do enough printing, and you're prepared to take the risk.

With CIS systems you have to be careful about the calibration, at least with OEM inks you know there is going to be a decent QC system in place, but with some other the cheaper third party suppliers who knows?

Actually a few third party ink suppliers also supply paper, and printer profiles for each particular printer when using their ink and paper.
