Cheap...ish Monopod Head

Folks,

I'm going away next week for a few days and am restricted in the gear I can take, mainly due to weight issues (the gear, not me).

I cannot take my tripod but can take a monopod.

I currently have an unused Manfotto 682B but no head on it.

I'm seeking a cheapish head, preferably ball & socket but must be able to take Arca style plates.

I've had a good look on the 'net' but for the life of me cannot identify one.

If anyone out there in the ether can help or at least point me in the right direction I'd be obliged.

Have a look on eBay I got a very good arca plate monopod head for about £25 KWF was the make
 
what len/s camera do you intend using on it, its a bit hard for anyone to say not knowing this .

My main camera is a 1DX with a choice of lenses from 8mm up to a 500 f4 II plus TC's however the Dx is heavy as is the 500 so to reduce weight I'm taking or looking to take my 6d and a 24-40 2.8, 70-200 2.8 and either a 1.4x III or 2x III TC
 
I had thought about just getting a arca swiss quick release for mine, not really got on with ball and monopod
 
My main tripod is Gitzo S5 on which I use either my Wimberley Gimbal or RRS Ball Head, depending on what I'm shooting. Really like both hence my thoughts of a ball head for the monopod. However, I've since read a couple of web articles stating BH's aren't really compatible with monopods as too fiddly & with a monopod to pan you just turn the 'pod'. Common sense really. They recommend tilt heads only so might look for one of them.
 
the issue i had with ball head was trying to get it to have the right tightness so u can move it, but not so that it flops about... a pan and a tilt head is better as you can lock axis

Don't know what head you were using. Mine has a drag knob albeit I don't use the drag that much, but I get on just fine with mine and in fact am the opposite of you and don't like pan & tilts. Each to their own I suppose.
 
on a monopod I've prefered pan and tilt, on tripod it has ball on it mostly ;-)

You don't need a monopod for that, surely?

Support my camera and/or lens for one thing. If you read my initial post you'll note I can't take a tripod due to weight and space and a 'pod' and me can form a reasonably solid support.

In one's dreams maybe. It will do fairly little to stabilise camera when it is really needed, and will be just additional useless thing to carry. People use them for proper big glass, fight wild animals or as lighting poles. For video you need something more advance like Manfrotto 500 series. It is well and truly beyond me why you can't take tripod.
 
I have 'big' glass thanks. The fact I'm not taking the 'big' glass or fighting wild animals whilst on a weekend break is neither here nor there really and if you'd read my initial post and my other subsequent posts you might see why I can't or won't take my tripod.

i had a quick play with the manfrotto fancy 3 feet monopod with fluid head. really would quite like a system like that :)

That'll be mine then minus the head. Which head was it?
 
the more video head type, large with large qs plate, had £213 price tag, was a fluid head, i didnt have a camera on it, but it did move smoothly and feel right :), god knows what the confusing model number was, i didnt look
 
Well the cheap bit went out of the window and I've gone for an RRS mono head. Having the full size ball head on my tripod, I love the fluidity of it and its quality so have stuck with the same company for my monopod head.
