Cheap, light bag for 450D, kit and nifty fifty lenses?

Hi all,

just got a 450D with kit lens, and I plan to also get a nifty fifty for a 3 week trip to Hong Kong in a few months. So I'm looking for a nice, cheap and lightweight bag to carry these and maybe a few extras like a spare battery, a filter or two and maybe even a bottle for a drink.

I tried searching, but everyone has like 4-5 lenses when they're looking for bag recommendations, and I've got a very long way to go before I build up a collection like that :D

I'm on a really tight budget though, which is a bit limiting. Ideally I'd like to spend £30 max, which I realise won't get me great protection, but as long as it has SOME padding for bumping past people in busy streets or whatever, I'll be happy. And I don't want to have a big backpack that has many compartments I won't even use, so something as space-efficient as possible. I'm not too bothered if it's a shoulder bag either. People say shoulder bags can get really tiring, but those 2 small lenses and the relatively-light 450D shouldn't pose a problem, right?

I got an Olympus bag last year that I put a 40D with 17-85 and a Nifty Fifty in as well as a spare battery, filter, and sometimes charger.

Its a really good bag and should definitely be good for what you have!
 
If you could extend it by a tenner. You could probably get a Flipside 300 if you look on Camera Price Buster. I have one and it's fantastic for a 450D and a bit of gear. It offers padding, should pass though the airport easy enough and easy to carry as long as you don't have a heavy tripod with you all day long.
 
Check out the Lowepro Nova range. I've just bought a NOVA 180AW, a very neat little bag that makes excellent use of space! :)
 
Not sure what you're planning to shoot but are you sure you want a 50mm prime for HK? You might find a wide angle much more useful, eg the EF-S 10-22mm or maybe a zoom such as a 24-70mm.

PS: For the love of god, stop saying nifty fifty.
 
I've got a Lowepro Messenger bag. It's a satchel-type bag with 2 internal dividers.

On my honeymoon last year, I managed to fit in;
1st section: D5000 + 18-105mm
2nd section: 35mm, couple of filter boxes
3rd section: Bottle of water + small guide book (bent!)

There's also pockets at the front for cloth, SD cards etc.

The flap is held down by two clips, which is good for security, but for speed of access I also attached a couple of sticky-back Velco strips.

It's not obviously a camera bag (the only give-away is a small rubber Lowepro badge which I intend to unpick) which may be a consideration.

The only downside I've found is that the shoulder strap isn't padded and is fixed to the bag.

I could do with the low light performance of the 50mm, and as much as I'd like a wide angle lens, the 10-22mm is about 10x the price of the 50mm. If you'd like to donate money towards one, I'd gladly accept :D But otherwise I'll have to make do with the 18-55 for wider shots, and just use it well (stitching or something).

But it is a nifty fifty, and there is no point in having a wide angle :S
 
Doesn't help with the bottle of water, which if I'm being honest I wouldn't want to carry in the same compartment as my camera anyways, but I'll suggest a Crumpler Jimmy Bo 500. I've had mine for about a year and it's what I've been using for my walk around bag when I've been away to Hong Kong and New York. It can be worn across the body or, if you so desire, around the waist like a holster. I've never had a shoulder strap on it and it's always been comfortable enough to wear all day. Probably mainly because it doesn't hold enough kit to really weigh you down.

My other half killed my trusty old Sony P200 when a bottle of water emptied itself in her bag when we were in Hong Kong a couple of years back :(
