suitable for the job? It also seems to double up as a flash trigger which looks useful for when I get into strobist stuff.

Check out flash in the pan's advert in the for sale/advertisers section. He sells a radio trigger with the correct lead for your camera.
 
RF-602 is primarily a flash trigger, but works fine as a camera remote release. Or the other remote release that Flash In The Pan sells, as mentioned by Cowasaki.

What's wrong with a simple cable release for a couple of quid off ebay? They also have a switch so you can lock it on Bulb without holding down the button.
