Hi ,
I am looking at buying a remote shutter release for my canon 1dii , are the cheapo ones from ebay worth buying or am I better spending the extra ?
Can buy a wireless one for sub £20 vs £45ish for canon cable release . Not going to be used very often but would be nice to have ( like alot of tog gear !)
Has anybody any experience or recommendations..
Thanks

I've used a YN-126 wireless remote with my Nikon & works well - even from a distance....

I can't see any point paying Canon prices. I use a TR-90 release, bought from eBay. It is well featured and offers good value, if you can make use of the features it offers.

I bought mine from etefore last March, when it cost only £17 all in. Prices seem to have gone up a little since then, but it is still a good unit.

For a wireless option I also have an RF-602 trigger/receiver pair, which doubles as a remote shutter release or off camera wireless flash trigger.

Last Sunday I used the wired timer release to set a 15 second timer and then fire off three shots at 5 second intervals, allowing me time to get into a group shot, and the RF-602 to trigger two off camera flashes.

Here's the pic....

I could have used two sets of RF-602 trigger/receivers, plus an extra receiver, to allow me to trip the camera remotely and still fire the flashes. It's all good gear. FITP sells the RF-602 units. Make sure to ask for the right camera shutter release cable for your camera if ou want to go that route.

Must admit it (TR90) was the first non Canon item I have ever bought.
Well pleased with it, has not necessarily changed my mind about buying non Canon in future but it worked on the job (1) I needed it for, and as Tim says the genuine was (is) silly money.

Great , thanks for the replies , always a bit worried that something cheap may not always be cheerful esp when from HK .

Another way to look at it - some things, especially branded goods, are ridiculously overpriced. The manufacturing cost for some of these things must be pence. Look at the price of lens hoods, or quick release plates. A simple Manfrotto RC2 QR plate (actually it's a 200PL-14) costs around £12. I imagine it has no more material cost or manufacturing complexity than a door hinge, yet you can buy those in pairs, with screws, for under £1 in B&Q.

You shouldn't always assume that cheap means inferior. Sometimes it simply means it's fairly priced. The timer remote is little more than a digital watch with a lead and plug attached. You can buy a digital watch from Argos for a fiver. £21 for the timer remote seems reaonable enough. I really have no idea why Canon's own equivalent costs £120. It's essentially the same thing.

Do you or are you thinking of doing any off camera flash? If so the 602 radio triggers from FITP with the relevant cables are great camera remote triggers and you can use them for flash remote triggering too. Very flexible system.

Thanks to the predominantly positive replies here I'm going to take a chance on a non-Canon remote release. I can get a well specced remote timer with interval-o-meter etc for much less than Canon's price for a basic shutter switch and plug.

think I will go for 602 from FITP , dont intend to do much / any off camera flash but then 3 month ago I wouldn't have got up at 4am to see a sunrise;)

If you are doing then just tell him when you place the order so that he can include the normal leads and the remote leads for your camera. I don't think he charges for the remote lead if you ask him when you place the order.

RF-602s work great, like Darren says specify the brand when you order so you get the right cable. :)

The MC-36R is a good one too, a little more pricey, but a lot more options as a remote trigger.
