cheap solution to wifi files to pc

What I need is a neat way to move around in studio, shooting and playing images right away so to give model/audience instant feedback. What we discuss here is a wifi device attached to camera, allowing transmitting photos from camera to PC while taking pictures.

USB tethering works, but messy, and until you trip over the cable…

Dedicated Canon wifi transmitter, for example – WFT-E4 II (for 5D markII) works too, it sets you back £600. I have not seen a vendor used it in Focus on Imaging show.

I recently found this cool gadget Eye-fi SD card which solves the problem in a cheap way. It is slower than USB in sending files – and it works in a less messy way.

Eye-fi has a wifi transmitter build-in.

Canon 1D series has two memory card slots – CF+SD.
(edited) For those camera only have CF card, you may attempt to fit a CF card adapter, eye-fi warned against this for risk of data corruption.

Basically, I set the camera to save raw file to CF card, and a small jpg to SD card.

It then automatically uploads the file to a specific folder on your pc.

It uses your wifi network to do the job. If you don’t have wifi network. You can use Connectify to turn your pc wifi card to a wifi hot spot. Some pc (like mine) doesn’t support this though. I use an Andriod phone. There is a Andriod app ‘Wifi Hotspot ‘ allows you to create a mini network to link up the camera and pc.

Pro which is twice the price will transmit RAW as well as jpg. But I don’t think it is a good idea – it takes too long

But Eye-Fi say very strongly not to do this. They believe that sooner or later you will experience data corruption. I spent 3 days recovering files from an Eye-Fi that had been used like this. When they go it isn't pretty.

Thanks for the correction about CF adapter.

I just think use 1D (mark3 or up) with both cards sound really cool.

No. It won't. It will be very slow anyway due to the file size.

But you don't want to do anyway, unless you have a very busy shooting schedule and an automated work flow.

not too worried about speed, would only be for posed shots (portrait/prodcut) a distance from the computer. would be a million times easier while experimenting to see it straight(ish) on a calibrated screen rather than having to pull the card.

I can report to you that the waiting time between shoots won't spoil the smooth flow with models.

I had the standard Eyefi card and got it to transmit both jpegs and raw files to my Mac and also import them straight into iPhoto and Aperture 3. Not too slow either.
So, take the picture and seconds later its displayed on the screen. I think it works with Lightroom too, but never tried it.

To get them into Aperture, you will need to read up about Aperture Hot Folder, HERE and install it.

Dont know about windows though cos I dont use it, but I am sure there are ways to do the same.........
