Was about to purchase a cheap battery grip for my Canon 500D however my boss just told me that cheap brands destroy your camara? Is there any truth in this, can't say I've heard it mentioned before.

I bought a grip for my 550D from Amazon. Good price and the build quality seems as good as the genuine Canon one, I've had it for two months now with no problem. It came with two batteries but if they don't last long it's no big deal. Mine is made by Meike.

Thanks, thought it sounded a bit far fetched, surely they wouldn't sell them if they were breaking cameras
 
Manufacturers like to sow this doubt in the public's mind - no different to using branded versus own-brand washing powder - both do the job, one costs more than the other and at the end of the day your clothes are cleaner... there does exist this paranoia though that somehow a piece of not-<camera brand here> plastic with some not-<camera brand here> wires in it is somehow automatically inferior to a very similar piece made by <camera brand here>.

If it was a more complex piece of kit than a battery compartment, a couple of switches and a rotary dial then maybe there's a point - but a battery grip is close to as simple as it gets.
 
Exactly. Quite often the unbranded Chinese kit is made in the same factory and on the same production line but is sold without the brand name stickers.

I had the Hahnel hc 60d and a battery for my 60d for a year now and never had an problem so far. it is quite good, it does make the camera heavy but stead in your hands.
 
I've had a 3rd party grip fitted to my 550D for over a year and it works perfectly. It cost around £35 and came with 4 batteries that still work perfectly well too. I've changed 2 of the batteries in the grip last week and they'd been in since december. I've also had 3rd party grips on a 7D and a 5D2 and they work flawlessly too. They are the same as the originals but a fraction of the cost. I've just ordered a 5DMkIII and I'll be looking for a grip in the near future, but I wont be paying £330 for a Canon one, I'll go for a patterned one instead. Both Meike and Hahnel seem to be very good grips for the price.
