Can anyone suggest a cheap underwater camera. Something like a waterproof point and shoot would be more than fine. It is for a present to someone who is moving to the Marshall Islands in the middle of the Pacific. :)

what's a definition of cheap?

I'm looking into this market ready for a purchase ahead of my summer holiday, torn bettween the following at the minute:

Fuji Z33WP - Maximum cheapness and reasonably reviewed
Fuji XP10 - update on the above and gets reasonable reviews
Olympus Mju Tough 3000 - Slightly wider and faster lens than above for slightly more money

I wanted to spend around £100 so it looks like the XP10 will be getting my cash.

I have a Fuji XP10 and have taken lots of pics with it already. I quite like it but the screen can be hard to see when there's too much sun. Unfortunately I didn't have time to try it underwater yet...

That seems to be a problem on just about every viewfinder less compact these days, I'm prepared to accept that! Wish it had a slightly wider and faster lens but I can probably live with that to!

Wonder if any will make there way into the refurb fuji shop before I have to commit to buy.

always the case, look at the higher end

played with a sony tx5 in store, i like:
feel
compact
panaorama feature
looks

For what is worth I tried the Pentax W90 and I really liked it, but it comes at twice the price and some more compared to the fuju, what camera did a good review of about 10 models last month, maybe you can still get that at WH Smiths

it depends on how you define 'waterproof'k, for splashing about or a bit of snorkelling one of the olympus tough P & S should be fine. For prolonged imsersion or anything deeper than 5m you'll need a dedicated housing.

Cheap and waterproof ain't two words that sit well together

Unfortunately this seems to be the case, I had a cheapy underwater camera that I took to the red sea, it was fine with a few snorkelling trips but when I took it to the dead sea earlier this year the salt must have been too much for it and it no longer focuses properly :(

My Panasonic FT1 is pretty good, it's been in the sea with no ill effects and the video is especially good quality both picture and audio.

The dead sea is a pretty hostile environment for any piece of electronic equipment to survive let alone a cheap waterproof camera!

I've finally decided on a Fuji XP10 mainly for the price as I don't expect to get a huge amount of use out of it. I actually reserved one for pick up from my local jessops on Saturday but when I went down they tried to fob me off with the display model at full price which I wasn't keen on! Fuji now have some in there refurbished section going for a song so I may send my money that way!

I've just ordered a refurbished Fuji XP10 for a grand total of £93.90 inc P&P obviously for that sort of money I'm not expecting SLR like performance. I'll do a little write up when I get it if there is any interest?

Have just recieved my refurbished Fuji XP10, can't believe how small it is now if only the battery would hurry up and charge!

I've been considering one of these, would love to hear how you get on with it.

Another vote for the panasonic FT-1 I love mine I use it mainly to take photo's and video while canoing, I have also used it when at the beach. Not taken it under water for long periodsbut if you snorkling then you should be fine. I also used an olympus 790 sw which was good, but prefer the panasonic. Although might be a bit more than you wanting to pay.
