Hi all,

Creating a shopping list, but thought it might be best to consider cheaper alternatives as well, makes it more likely the wife will agree.

So what are the cheaper alternatives to the following items, prices and where you are sacrificing...

nikon EN-EL4a battery
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRii
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8
Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8

nikon EN-EL4a battery
Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRii
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8
Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8

Nikon 70-200 v1!, one of the 80-200 f 2.8 variants.

Nikon 28-70 f 2.8 Sigma do a varient

Nikon 14-24. Good question, maybe sigma 12-24 if you can find a good one

Batteries, some own brand, but in the grand scheme of the amount of cash here they're very little

I'd be tempted to go for:
17-35mm 2.8
50mm 1.8
70-200 2.8

midrange zoom is chunky and expensive. Standard 50mm is extremely sharp and a good substitute. Might need a bit more cropping to adjust for the fixed focal length but plenty resolution there, particularly with the camera you'll be using.

Batteries: plenty of cheap copies on ebay. Don't rally know how reliable but possibly worth a try for a back up.

Battery, 7dayshop equivalent.
Lenses, Sigma rather than Nikon.

Downsides? Battery, not had any problems with any of mine in a D70, D200 or D700.
Lenses? Some people have reported problems with Sigma lenses - I have a few and have had no problems at all. Yes, If I fell into a wedge of cash, I would upgrade to the Nikon versions but at the moment, the Sigmas do the job just fine! Oh, and I'm not sure if Sigma do an OS version of their 70-200 f/2.8 (just checked in an ad in a mag and it seems they do, for £1299.99 compared to the Nikon at £1629.

70-200 VR1. I've got one. My most used lens. Fab, slight vignetting but doesn't bother me.
28-70 Nikkor The Beast. Legendary Fantastic...yes, I've got one. Probably won't upgrade to 24-70 even if I could afford it.
Had the 18-35 Nikkor as a wide, it's good. But I don't really do wide. Great value on FF sold it for £225

thanks for the feed back.

Sigma lenses, do they have letters on them to indicate crop or full frame?

Yup. DC - crop; DG - FF.

For Tamron, Di indicates that the lens has extra coatings to reduce ghosting and DiII indicates that the lens is designed for Crop sensors.
