I was recently advised that a shot taken via my 400 F2.8L was like 'looking through a pane of glass'.

I didn't think too much about it and just put it down to me being on the wrong settings.

However, my wife just noticed something while looking towards the end of the lens that I rarely see...... :eek::eek::eek:

There is rather a lot of cobweb in there and this pic hardly does any justice to the genre of 'web photography' :exit:

And it's not a lack of use either - just a lack of checking the front end.

I regularly look at the front of my lens to make sure it's clean. I seem to automatically check it when I take the lens cap off.

How did you not notice that? :eek:
Don't you use a lens cap?
It has a rather large hood on the end of it and I simply hadn't looked!!! The 400F2.8L doesn't have a lens 'cap' in the traditional sense - it has a semi-rigid fabric 'end-bag' which goes over the hood but I never use it. I just stand the lens vertically on the carpet when not in use. The glass is probably a good 8 - 10 inches away from the (carpet) end of the hood. I guess I inadvertantly covered a spider one day and it decided to make its home in there.:exit:

I think it gives it character.:D

I'm pretty bad about not cleaning things (elements, sensor, etc)... but I'm pretty sure I would have noticed that!
If it was my only lens, I'd have noticed it more quickly too. Most of the time I use the 500 (& 2x) and I only fire with the 400 if something is close enough, which unfortunately isn't often enough.

I took this with the 500 (1000mm) last weekend, but then he moved closer and so I picked-up the 400. The resulting shot (below) is clearly not right, given it's from the same location within minutes of the first. It's also a better lens (when it's clean!):

Criminally off topic and you know it.

But superb images there John.

:thinking::thinking::thinking: Hardly off topic.

The lower picture was taken through the cobweb covered lens in my opening post. Not a superb image at all. :(
