Take 3 self portraits from a tripod, so that the aspect of the room doesn't change. Open all three images in PS, copy images #2 and #3 onto new layers above #1 and then mask out all the background apart from the person and what ever they are holding.
Caveats:
Try to get a constant exposure for each image.
Try to make sure that whatever you are changing doesn't overlap (until you've got a handle on what you are doing).
Try to avoid flash if possible so that you don't have to muck about with shadows, until you are comfortable with the idea.

Edit: IF you want to go for sureal next time, get a shot of yourself at the right angle and then clone it over the picture on the wall so that you're leaning out of it!
