Choice of two Dell monitors

It looks like it;s time to replace my monitor, since changing PCs the colours are weird (bit too red) even after calibration and before that there was problems with the greys anyway.

I read a thread earlier where people were talking about the Dell U2311H and it seemed to be appreciated.

U2311H

My friend recommends the slightly more expensive Dell 2209WA.
2209WA

He thinks the 2209 is better because it is eIPS rather than IPS (I don't know the difference and because the 2209 has a contrast ration of 3000:1 compared to the contrast ratio of the 2311 which is 1000:1.

The reason why this is important to me is that I'm pretty sure my current monitor is 1000:1 but when you calibrate it you can't get a true black and white, you have to compromise and have one or the other so a higher contrast ratio should address this. It's quite important to me as most of what I do is B&W.

The thing is looking at the tech description of both monitors they same to measure contrast in different ways so it's hard to make a direct comparison.

The 2209 says:

Dynamic Contrast Ratio 3000:1 (typical)

The 2311 says:

1000:1 (typical), 10,000:1 (dynamic)

Wouldn't it be nice if manufacturers used standard terms for all their products.:bang:

I wouldn't think you wouldhave to worry about the lack of an e on the ips.
E-IPS is iirc the budget end of IPS panels. H and S IPS are better but more expensive.

all are better than TN panels though

this review suggests it is an E_IPS screen.

The 2209 does not have a very good screen resolution (1680x1050) for a new monitor - 1920x1080/1920x1200 is pretty much "entry level" these days as far as monitor resolutions go. It does not support displayport either which would make me think twice.

The U2311H also has a far better pixel pitch @0.265mm.

I'd have said that the U2311H is a "no brainer" unless I am missing something.

Cheaper dell panels tend to get bleed at the top and bottom. Its more noticeable when the background is dark and you get light edges.

The cheaper out of those two does have better resolution but the contrast ratios are confusing. The more expensive one says 3000:1 and the cheaper 1000:1, but then the cheaper one says something about 10'000:1 dynamically.

I guess the more expensive one is more expensive for a reason. I'd do some research about those contrast ratios before deciding.
