So yesterday I was talking with my partner who asked me- if you only had one body and one lens that you could take on our next big trip, what would it be? Made me wonder... Still haven't come up with an answer althonthe 5d3 plus a zoom would probably be the way I would go in the end altho the lightness of a CSC would be quite tempting.... What do you think? Merry Christmas.

We go to Oz to see my brother next year... Anything and everything - it's just a question to see what people say. I will pack my airport essentials bag and take more than that!
 
Nikon D800 and a Nikon AFS 24-70mm f2.8 G lens as a general walkabout lens. With 36MP to play with or using TIFF 105mp it give scope for cropping for " out of range" type photos without much quality loss. . If I knew I was going to do distance work then same camera but with the AFS 80-400 mm f 4.5-5.6 lens as those just 2 of the lens choices I own. For"covert" work ie in places where a big camera and lens might get pinched ,then Ii would revert to my Panasonic HC-X900M camcorder which can easily be carried about in a trouser, or other , pocket.

This is what I used as it still is 16 mm camera + video work. Quality better when not in youtube

I guess it would depend on if the trip had any specific requirements like you were shooting sports, etc, but if we're just talking a standard trip for me it would be my 5D2 + 24-105L. I have a 7D and some other lenses but I've hardly used them since I bought the 5D and 24-105 about 2 years ago (apart from when I've been shooting film).

I've learned the less gear you carry, the more time you spend looking for things to photograph rather than deciding which camera and lens to use. :)
 
X-T1 and 18-55mm would be my choice, pretty much all I do carry these days along with a 14mm if I think it might be wanted
 
I went to NZ a couple of years ago and am determined to go back. If I was to go tomorrow with a single body and lens I'd be on the phone to the chap I sold my D800E to, to get that back and take that with my 24-70/2.8; they were a razor sharp pairing. I'd probably try to smuggle a little 20/2.8 without anyone noticing for a bit more width too though.
 
Am also a fuji convert mine would be my xe1 and 18 -55 just love the feel of it in my hand
 
I would tell her not to be so silly - I don't even think about asking her which pair of shoes she's goin to take. Or I would tell her I'm going to take my 50-300m lens, and then take them all as she most probably does't know the difference. :D
 
I'm thinking for our beach holiday in Feb to take just the D610 and a (rented) 28-300, that would do everything I need on a nice relaxing holiday.

Went to the USA to see my brother last year. Took and SLR and a couple of lens and took 32 shots on it in 2 weeks ... and over 800 on my S100 compact. So i'd go with that and leave the SLR at home .... it's just more stuff to lug about and worry about. :)
 
With a CSC you are allowed to take 2 lenses and one other accessory, as it still weighs less and is smaller than a bulky DSLR.
 
In that case, Ill add the 10-24 to the 18-135 to go with the X-T1! Actually, having taken the 10-24 as well on my last holiday, I didn't use it so would be happy to take just the 18-135 on the X-T1 next year. I should point out that I have already taken pretty much all the shots of Crete that I'll ever need with an assortment of kit so can easily do with a much reduced bag but the Fuji pairing is enough for almost all MY needs anyway.
I'll take the Giottos Vitruvian tripod as the other accessory!

It balances fine on the D610 - I took that combo to Vietnam a couple of months ago and it was great.

If I had the money I'd get a D750 instead of the D610 for its better AF but otherwise that would be my choice again.

That said, I'm just dabbling in M4/3 to see if that could replace the DSLR, not that I really mind the weight - I lumped a D700 and 28-70 up Kilimanjaro last year (see my avatar)!
