Hi..

Just a bit of info on a CPL.. 72mm.

What are good one's to buy and what sort of price would you expect to pay.
I have seen loads advertised but they vary in price a bit, not sure which are good or bad ones.
The one I was looking at was the Hoya Pro 1 but the same filter I have seen priced at £40 and £90 for the same lens.

Cheers.

I use the Hoya Pro1 72mm CPL.

They are very expensive brand new and fetch even around £50 2nd hand.

There was an article on one of the Photomags in the last couple of months about fake filters flooding the UK market. If its half the price of the rest its probably not what it says it is on the tin. I did get a good deal on a 72mm Hoya Pro 1 Digital through Amazon not that long ago, might be worth looking there. Again I would check you are buying direct from Amazon, and not one of their 3rd part sellers if the deal sounds too good.

Ebay seems to be full of cheap Hoya filters alright.

+1 for Hoya, alternatively B+W which I've found amazingly good.

However you don't want a 72mm one.. As a Canon user I recommend you get a 77mm one and a 72->77mm step up ring cheaply from ebay. This is because lots of L-glass and better EF-S lenses have 77mm filter threads, for example:

EF-S 17-55/2.8 and 10-22/3.5-4.5, THE best 2 EF-S lenses imo.

EF 17-40 & 16-35 wide-angle zooms for FF, the new 16-35 might be 82mm
EF 24-105/4, the kit/goto normal zoom
EF 24-70/2.8 fast normal zoom (though note that the II version is 82mm I think!)

The big white tele lenses.. 70-200/2.8 all versions are 77mm... same for the 100-400, 300/4 and 400/5.6.

From third parties, Sigma 50/1.5 and 85/1.4 come immediately to mind as 77mm filter thread lenses.

So, buy a 72mm now --> buy a 77mm or 82mm later ;)

Dead right I've seen some cheapies on there.. but the one from amazon @ £65 pounds looks good, I've seen a Pro 1 for £90 pounds but that was an HD lens which I'm not sure what that stands for or how much better it is?

Cheers

A couple of others that are 77mm

Sigma 10-20mm
Sigma 70-200mm

.....more affordable options for the future...go for the 77mm filter!

Well now you have got me thinking about a step up ring.. before I order.
Question..
Will the step up ring have any affect on the quality going from 72 to77.

Cheers
