cleaning and maintaining lenses

Hi guys,

Only had my camera for a few days and already I have bits of dust and fingers prints from my 1 year old daughter on the end of my lenses!!

I was wondering how best to clean them? Obviously I don't want to risk scratching the glass by rubbing a cloth over and pulling small bits of grit across the lens, so I was wondering what everyone uses and how?

A blower is good for grit, I also have a very soft lens brush for anything a little more stubborn. Every now and then, or if the lens is greasy I will use a small amount of alcohol on a soft microfibre cloth I keep exclusively for lens cleaning (and keep it in a zip lock bag for storage to keep it dust free).

It's expensive, rather buy a 500ml of isopropanol alcohol from Amazon, mix it 60/40 with water and add a few drops of Fairy and you have almost a litre of lens cleaner for around £6.

I'd caution against Fairy liquid. It contains salt amongst other nasties. I'd much rather pay a tenner for Eclipse than risk a £1000 plus lens for the sake of a few bob. :)

I'm talking a few drops (so 3ml-5ml) in 900ml of liquid, ROR cleaner has more liquid soap in its formulation that that and has good reviews/results.
 
Thanks for the suggestions guys, I think I may just pay a bit more and get the ready made stuff for peace of mind!

Depends what you mean by peace of mind, Eclipse fluid is just 100% methanol, it can be hard on some plastics so take care of how you use it on a lens. You could just use pure isopropanol if having to mix ingredients worries you.

It's a safer alcohol than methanol on plastics....
