Got a fingerprint on a Hoya UV filter whilst away this week and couldn't clean it without leaving a smeary finish. Tried the usual methods - clean cloth - water - even a bit of washing up liquid!

Anyone got a foolproof method? I've read that Hoya filters are notorious for this problem. What alternative make would be better?

Buy a lenspen. Cleans any filter up lovely, except polarisers which you arent supposed to use them on.

Or just dont use a UV filter.
 
Windolene.

Don't take my word for it, but i have used it on old filters where it didn't matter if I ballsed it up - if the windolene ate the coating on the filter or something. I wouldn't dare do that on a lens element, but a plain old filter, why not? It works a charm. It'll look like new after.
 
Thanks all. Well I've had another go today, but unfortunately getting on my nerves a bit so I've decided to do without them.

On UV and ND I have used a soft soap solution, a good rinse with gold water and blow dry with hair drier or hand drier if out and about.
 
I used to use breath and cig papers
But Iv upgraded it to
Spec wipes out of boots and cig papers
It left it sparkling, it says not for use on plastic

Which is almost certainly a mixture of water and isopropanol. Water is free, isopropanol can be bought for around £5 for 500ml. Dilute the alcohol 1:1 with water and you've got a lifetime's supply (unless you live to be 1000) of cleaning solution for a fiver.

Oh, and for UV filters I recommend a brillo pad. It'll stop you being tempted to use the useless things.
